The Diplomat season 4 trailer previews fireworks after the show's first Emmy win

It's an exciting time to be a fan of The Diplomat and not just because the highly anticipated fourth season premieres on Oct. 15. The political thriller has been critically acclaimed and a fan-favorite since its premiere on Netflix, even winning leading star Keri Russell an Actor Award for her performance, but the series has finally won its first Emmy Award.

During the 2026 Emmy Awards ceremony on Sept. 14, Allison Janney took home the win for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, marking the Netflix show's first win among eight total nominations since 2024. Janney was nominated alongside the series for Outstanding Drama Series, as well as Russell and Rufus Sewell in leading acting categories.

The Diplomat has certainly earned some major bragging rights going into its most exciting season yet, which will only bolster the show with more momentum going into the next Emmys cycle. As celebration for the show's big win, Netflix have fans a present in the form of the full-length trailer for The Diplomat season 4. In the new preview, Kate anticipates the fireworks of Hal and Penn's decision.

Jumping off from the third season finale, in which Kate learns that Hal and Penn have secretly stolen the Poseidon missile, an apocalyptic-level weapon that poses a massive threat to humanity. She had already been worried about the power her husband and the president both held and what they were capable of as a team before she even knew about the missile. But now? She's expecting disaster.

In The Diplomat season 4 trailer, Kate confronts Hal about the missile and advocates against the administration's possession of such a dangerous weapon. But how does one get themselves out of such a tricky situation? Kate also appears to approach Penn with brutal honesty, and as we know from the past, that doesn't always work in Kate's favor with the president.

As the latest look at the new season teases, we're in for another round of stressful situations with Kate. She's playing interference amid a mounting international crisis and also unexpectedly teaming up with Penn's husband, who's bored and looking for something to do. But it's more than being bored. Todd seems to also be feeling the shift in his wife's demeanor since becoming POTUS.

More than ever, The Diplomat season 4 finds Kate questioning her role in this political machine and wondering aloud if she's even helping anyone or if she has become part of the problem. With the trailer posing that question, the fourth season will no doubt dig even deeper into Kate as a character and give Russell so much great writing to chew on. Elsewhere in the season 4 trailer, Kate has additional worries about what tricks Trowbridge could have up his sleeve this time around. He's been a frequent thorn in their side, no matter if he's an enemy or an ally. Stuart and Eidra are continuing to navigate the next phase of their relationship in tandem with the stressors of their job, but Eidra seems to pushing back against Stuart's expressions of love.
