Sweet Magnolias and 4 best Netflix shows that didn't get a final season

When you start watching a new television show, you run the risk of the series being canceled right out from under you without warning. That's how it's always been with TV and it's the deal we make by watching any shows. These days, fans have grown frustrated with cancellations and dislike even starting a show on Netflix or other streaming services if there's no promise of a resolute ending.

In many ways, that's not a fair way to go about watching television, but it's also understandable why fans would be wary of taking the plunge and investing their time into a story when they will just end up canceled. It's an issue that viewers have taken with Netflix in recent years. There's a long list of Netflix original series that have been canceled after one, two, or three seasons without an ending.

While the streamer has gotten better over the years at making sure that fan-favorites that have reached a certain point wrap up their storylines with final seasons, some shows still fall through the cracks for various reasons. You could name over a dozen Netflix shows that didn't get a final season, but these four are some of the best and most egregious examples of series without final seasons.

Sweet Magnolias

Netflix released Sweet Magnolias season 5 in June 2026, and for three months after the episodes dropped, fans were left wondering whether we would ever pour it out in Serenity, South Carolina, ever again. Well, as it turned out, the romantic drama series wound up getting canceled rather than earning a renewal for season 6. Not quite the outcome fans were hoping for.

Regardless, the decision appeared to divide Sweet Magnolias fans. Some had already felt that the romantic drama series had already declined in quality, but others felt strongly that canceling the show without a proper ending after five seasons wasn't the move. We're inclined to agree that Netflix should have considered giving the series a final season or, at the very least, a wrap-up movie.

Sweet Magnolias season 5 didn't leave too many major cliffhangers behind, but the latest season wasn't especially crafted to be the final season. Being so, there are unanswered questions and unresolved story threads. Some of the books by Sherryl Woods hold the answers for closure, but it still stings that the comforting romantic drama didn't get one last hurrah.

Ransom Canyon

Before Sweet Magnolias got the boot from Netflix, the cancellation trend in fall 2026 began with fellow page-to-screen romantic drama series Ransom Canyon also getting canceled. Unlike Sweet Magnolias, the Western romance had only aired two seasons and was much more of an underdog. If the viewership didn't align, then season 3 wasn't guaranteed, thus...

Ransom Canyon season 2 already had quite an uphill battle to climb in order to make noise this summer. Let's just say that despite starring Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly, the first season wasn't exactly a breakout hit. The series found a loyal audience, but once the shorter second season arrived over a year later, a portion of that audience had been shed and tuned in elsewhere.

While Ransom Canyon could have and should have continued with at least one last season, the second season's finale didn't really do the show many favors. The central romance was resolved without conflict or cliffhanger, which made for an easy out regarding cancellation. We'll never get to see the show's potential realized. In another life, the show could have lasted for six seasons.

GLOW

Sweet Magnolias and Ransom Canyon are two of the most recent examples of Netflix shows that were canceled without final seasons, but if we turn the clock back a bit, you will remember that GLOW was canceled before it could return for its fourth and final season. Honestly, we aren't mad enough about this and we don't talk about it nearly as much as we should.

GLOW made its premiere on Netflix back in 2017, and the women's wrestling comedy found instant success among viewers and landed multiple Emmy Award nominations. In August 2019, Netflix renewed the series for season 4, which would have be the show's final season. However, with the pandemic causing delays throughout 2020, Netflix canceled the show in October 2020.

The cast and crew had already started filming GLOW season 4 in February 2020 and had finished the season's first episode. Because its budget was already high and would have increased with the new COVID protocols, GLOW was canceled. Outbreaks and the long hiatus was also a concern for Netflix. Now, we'll never see how the story would have ended for the team's last act.

Shadow and Bone

If there's any Netflix show that fans are still just as angry about ending as the day that it happened, it's definitely Shadow and Bone. The fantasy drama based on the books by Leigh Bardugo premiered in April 2021 and was followed up by its second season in March 2023. Unfortunately for diehard fans, these were the only two seasons that were ultimately produced.

For the most part, both seasons of the Netflix series adapted the events of Bardugo's book trilogy, while some elements were omitted or changed. The series also featured much more overlap between the author's Six of Crows duology than actually occurs in the books, which was used to set up a separate spin-off series based on the characters. In fact, that was season 2's downfall.

Shadow and Bone was canceled due to the show's decline in viewership compared to how expensive the show was to make because of its extensive use of special effects. Being so, a number of loose threads were left unresolved and the setup for a potential spinoff went nowhere. Surely, Bardugo's books will adapted again in the future, but Netflix's adaptation was cut short without a final season.
