Sweet Magnolias author just gave Annie and Ty fans a way to get closure

Sweet Magnolias fans are still trying to process the unexpected cancellation of Netflix’s beloved romantic drama. While we’ve known that our time in Serenity was likely coming to an end, the expectation was that Netflix would renew the show for a final season, which would give the writers the chance to bring the show’s unresolved storylines to a close. Instead, Netflix decided to pull the plug on the show and opted not to give the show a proper final season.

It’s a major disappointment to the fans who have been watching from Day 1, and it means that several storylines will not get a proper resolution—which is what makes the sting of Netflix’s cancellation hurt the most.

While Sweet Magnolias season 5 did not end with a major cliffhanger like some of the show’s past seasons, there were a lot of smaller cliffhangers left unresolved as the season came to a close. This was by design, as season 5 was never planned to be the show’s last, and the writers wanted to keep certain storylines open-ended with the purpose of exploring them further in season 6.

Among the storylines left unresolved was the relationship between Annie and Ty, who had been a core part of the show throughout the years. Season 5 was a particularly rough season for Annie and Ty fans due in large part to Carson Rowland’s decision not to return as Ty. Following Rowland’s exit, the writers had no choice but to write the character out of the show while keeping his spirit alive in the most heartbreaking of ways.

Ty might not have appeared in season 5, but his presence was felt throughout the season as Annie struggled with their long-distance relationship. After a series of broken promises, Annie finally broke with Ty after he missed her graduation, but that didn’t stop fans from hoping that the pair might find their way back to each other in season 6. Now that the show has been canceled, we’ll never get to see how their story ends on the show; however, Sweet Magnolias author Sherryl Woods has provided fans with an option for getting some closure to their story.

“So many of you have expressed your disappointment about not just the cancellation of Sweet Magnolias, but that you’ll never know exactly what happened next for Annie and Ty. While the storylines between TV and books never match exactly, they do get their happily-ever-after in the books,” Woods revealed to fans via Instagram.

As Woods pointed out, while the storyline might not match up exactly, if fans are hoping to give Ty and Annie a happy ending, they can turn to the pages of Home in Carolina as an alternate to seeing how the show might have brought the characters’ story to an end.

Home in Carolina is the fifth book in the series, which inspired Netflix’s hit show, putting the focus on Ty and Annie. Funny enough, while the show and book timelines and storylines might not match up perfectly, the book begins after Ty returns home after Annie has worked to rebuild her life following the heartbreak caused by her high school sweetheart. When Ty returns home, their unresolved feelings stir up old memories and new challenges for the pair in a book that explores second chances and the enduring bonds of friendship, making Home in Carolina the perfect option for fans looking to see Annie and Ty get a proper happy ending.

Sure, we wish that closure could have come via a final season, but at least we can turn to the book for one final chapter in Ty and Annie’s story and get at least some type of closure.
