Squid Game is coming to a close. This feels abrupt as the series has only been going for two seasons so far, with a third on its way at the end of June. It might be difficult to keep finding fresh ways to keep the series vibrant, though. Once the games are used up, how can we still have the same level of violence?

Sure, if Netflix and Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk wanted to force the show to keep going, they would. There have been too many views and too much money made for all the parties to quit if they didn't want to. But Dong-hyuk knows all good things must end.

He isn't happy about it, however. Speaking at the premiere of season 3 in London earlier in June, Dong-hyuk said, "I’ve devoted six years of my life into this show, and to think that it’s all done and over, I do also feel quite sad." He expressed happiness that the show had done so well, but also relief that the series was done.

Squid Game creator has mixed feeling about the iconic series ending

To be fair, Dong-hyuk did hint that if there ever were a Squid Game spin-off, he could see the setting as something between seasons 1 and 2. If he is truly relieved that the series is over, he wouldn't make the spin-off. There is no guarantee he does.

As far as season 3, it is basically the second half of season 2. In that season, which was only released last December, Seong Gi-hun returns to the games in hopes of putting an end to the event. He won in the previous season, of course, so he should know how to get through the following season easily.

The issue is that games aren't the same, so Gi-hun cannot let other players know exactly what to expect. He is stuck in the same situation they are. He tries to lead a rebellion as the games continue, but while others die around him, he is spared. Why? We don't know yet.

Could Gi-hun somehow become the master of the games, or might he find a way to end them after all? We have seen through trailers that he is dressed in a tuxedo at some point, but how does that fit? We will learn the truth when season 3 drops on June 27. At least, Dong-hyuk will be happy to see the ending come.
