Scooby-Doo: Origins gets exciting update from Netflix ahead of 2027 premiere

If you're a fan of Scooby-Doo in any form, whether it's the original cartoon or the 2000s live-action movies, you're going to love the latest update on the next iteration of the beloved property. Netflix's upcoming prequel series just reached its biggest milestone yet, making Scooby's return to the small screen one step closer.

The first season of Netflix's live-action prequel series Scooby-Doo: Origins officially wrapped production, as announced by the streamer on Sept. 13. Scooby himself revealed the exciting news in a photo shared across Netflix social media platforms. He's about to help solve some wild mysteries, but his first one is giving us a better clue as to when the series will arrive.

In the most adorable photo of all time announcing a filming update, first-ever real Great Dane dog to play Scooby-Doo gave us his best puppy eyes while perching his paws on the film slate. The puppy donned the iconic SD logo on a chain hanging from his fittingly teal collar. He might look too cute to be real, but that's in fact the actual puppy playing the most famous cartoon dog in the world.

On top of giving us another glimpse at the adorable puppy who will soon be breaking our hearts, Netflix also offered a few behind-the-scenes snaps of his co-stars Mckenna Grace, Tanner Hagen, Abby Ryder Fortson, and Maxwell Jenkins, who play Daphne, Shaggy, Velma, and Fred respectively. The streamer hasn't yet shown a full photo of the new cast completely in character.

In one of the new behind-the-scenes photos, Grace pays homage to Sarah Michelle Gellar, who brought Daphne Blake to life on the big screen, by wearing a Buffy the Vampire Slayer t-shirt. Since Scooby-Doo: Origins is a modern reimagining and seemingly takes place in present day, it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for Daphne to go super-meta and wear that Buffy shirt in the show.

Speaking of modern reimagining, if you aren't sure what to expect from the new origin story, the new series catches up with Mystery Inc. before their official formation in their teen years. Long-time friends Daphne and Shaggy revel in the final days of their last summer attending camp, but when they happen upon a cute puppy who witnessed a supernatural murder, they take on the case.

Daphne and Shaggy team up with Velma as the brains of the operation and Fred, who's the new heartthrob in town. As they get deeper into the case, their own secrets are boiling to the surface. From the synopsis alone, it's clear that we haven't seen a version of Scooby-Doo quite like this one, and it's by far one of the most exciting releases coming soon to Netflix.

Along with the announcement that production has officially wrapped, Netflix once again confirmed that Scooby-Doo: Origins will premiere sometime in 2027. Post-production, which includes dubbing and special effects, now begins and can take upwards of six months. For now, don't expect the series to make its premiere on Netflix much before sometime in summer 2027.
