Very soon, the answer to "Scooby-Doo, where are you?" will be Netflix. The streaming service is currently in production on the live-action origin story of the colorful mystery-solving squad that has been bringing joy to viewers for generations. Scooby-Doo: Origins has already given fans a first look at Shaggy, Fred, Daphne, and Velma, but we're now getting a look at Scooby himself.
When the live-action series was first announced, fans wondered what form Scooby-Doo would take. Would he be animated? CGI? A real dog? Well, Netflix has finally provided the answer, and it's marking an exciting first for the iconic series. For the first time in any Scooby-Doo movie or show, the character of Scooby will be played by a real dog, and he couldn't be more adorable.
Netflix shared a first-look photo of the brown Great Dane puppy that's set to play Scooby in the first season of Scooby-Doo: Origins, which we included below. Tanner Hagen, who plays Shaggy, appears in the first footage from the show's set alongside his cute new cast member. Based on the premise that was shared when the series was announced, we knew that Scooby would be a puppy in this iteration rather than the full-grown, sandwich-loving dog we know and love.

Scooby-Doo: Origins confirmed for release on Netflix in 2027
In addition to revealing the dog who will be playing perhaps the most iconic animated canine of all time, Netflix also gave fans a better idea of when to expect the new series to begin streaming. Scooby-Doo: Origins has now been confirmed to be coming to Netflix in 2027. The streamer didn't specify a release window, such as a season or month, but we know the show will be out next year.
Filming on the first season of Scooby-Doo: Origins began on April 24, 2026 in Atlanta and will likely be completed in early September. Because production doesn't conclude until this fall, it's obvious why Netflix won't be releasing the show in 2026. However, we could be waiting up to a year (at the very most) for the show to release depending on how long the post-production process takes.
According to the synopsis, Scooby-Doo: Origins takes place in modern day and finds the Mystery Inc. gang coming together while at summer camp. Shaggy and Daphne are long-time friends who befriend a puppy who might have been a witness to a mysterious and supernatural murder. They band together with Velma and Freddy to get to the bottom of the chilling puzzle.
The series stars Mckenna Grace as Daphne, Tanner Hagen as Shaggy, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma, and Maxwell Jenkins as Freddy. The cast also includes Paul Walter Hauser as Scooby's owner and Frank Welker as the voice of the talking Great Dane puppy. Sara Gilbert and Maxwell Simkins also appear in the show in currently undisclosed roles.
Because of its connection to the beloved franchise, and the fact that its a modern live-action retelling of the group's origin story, Scooby-Doo: Origins might be one of the most highly anticipated new Netflix shows coming soon. If anything, fans simply want to know exactly what to expect from this series, its talking dog, and the fresh faces who will be playing characters we love.
