Ransom Canyon doubles down on TV-MA rating with sex and nudity in racier season 2

Ransom Canyon season 2 finally made its arrival on Netflix on July 23, the highlight of the summer for fans of romantic drama series. Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly headline the hit Netflix show based on the series of novels by Virgin River author Robyn Carr. We're dropped back in the world of feuding ranchers, grifters turning over a new leaf, and star-crossed lovers fighting against all odds.

Following the first season's finale, Staten remains in a deadlock battle for ownership of his ranch against his father, which is an ongoing conflict throughout the second season. Staten and Quinn also continue to feel the push and pull of their chemistry, especially when Quinn returns from New York City with a new boyfriend. And Quinn's mother only serves to stir that pot.

Staten and Quinn aren't the only ones finding themselves amid romantic ups and downs that range from sexy to scandalous. Going into the second season of Ransom Canyon, viewers might wonder whether the series has remained true to how it operated in the first season or if the TV-MA age rating reflects a change in its content. Ransom Canyon season 2 earns TV-MA age rating for male nudity and more

Like its first season, Ransom Canyon has also been given a TV-MA age rating from Netflix for sex, nudity, and language for its second season. However, there's also a bit of violence featured in the series that viewers also might want to watch out for. Netflix recommends the series for mature audiences only, which we're going to dive into with specific examples.

Sex and nudity

Ransom Canyon season 2 contains a number of sex scenes, though none of them contain any graphic nudity, they are racier. Each of the sex scenes are between opposite sex couples and vary in length. Most of the sex scenes are simply suggestive rather than actually showing the act itself. One sex scene depicts a man performing oral sex on a woman, which might be the raciest scene of the series. There are other non-graphic sex scenes that are between teenage characters who are minors.

The series does not contain any female nudity, but each instance of nudity in the series belongs to male characters. There are at least two major instances of male rear nudity. In one scene, a man gets out of bed and his female partner watches him and his bare backside leave the room. Another, less subtle, scene containing nudity finds a male character hosing himself off. He's completely naked, and there are closeups on his body before the camera pans out and rear nudity is visible.

While this isn't technically labeled as nudity, there's an extended sequence later on in the season that features a large group of men either wearing no shirt or a tank top. The camera lingers on their bodies as they work outside and sweat, which is shown in a handful of closeups. Again, it's not nudity, though some viewers might not be completely on board with the blatant eye candy.

Language and violence

Unlike other Netflix original romantic dramas that are a touch more PG-13, Ransom Canyon doesn't shy away from allowing its characters to speak like adults. Their are frequent casual uses of profanity, though "frequent" is relative when compared to other shows and movies where the characters curse in every other sentence. Just know, the characters use heightened language and expletives like "a*shole" and "motherf*cker" from time to time.

Ransom Canyon season 2 contains some light violence that's not as aggressive as some of the darkest thrillers on Netflix, but it's still notable. The violence mostly remains in the realm of characters engaging in small physical fights that don't even result in significant, visible injuries. However, toward the end of the season, a pregnant female character takes a fall that's potentially tragic, and the question surrounding this fall could be triggering to some viewers.
