Have you ever wondered how the best chocolatier we know, Willie Wonka, built his factory and made it into the wonderous place? Well, we get exactly that in the new movie Wonka starring Dune star Timothée Chalamet! The film made its debut on Dec. 15, 2023. Is the movie streaming on Netflix?

Unfortunately, no. Wonka is not streaming on Netflix, and most likely won't be in the future. There's two reasons for that. The first is that the musical fantasy is now available exclusively in theaters. After the pandemic, many production companies have gone back to releasing their films in theaters first. Just look at how successful the Barbie movie was in the box office! But, don't worry. The film will come to streaming eventually. Though it won't be on Netflix.

Where to watch Wonka after theaters

Whether you head to the big screens to watch Wonka and then want to rewatch the film at home, or you're simply going to wait for it to come to streaming, we've got your back. Wonka will be streaming on Max after theaters. This is because Warner Bros. Pictures is the production company behind bringing this story to life. And Warner Bros. owns Max.

Though lately it's been interesting to see Netflix get back to its roots and license shows and films from other networks and production companies. For example This Is Us aired on NBC, and will be coming to Netflix on Jan. 8, 2024. On Jan. 1, the first three John Wick movies are coming to the streamer as well, though they're currently available on Peacock. Streamers have started to realize that sharing is caring in some instances, and that Netflix can help their projects get more eyes on them.

The bottom line is, it's not likely that Wonka will stream on Netflix. At least not at the beginning right after its cinematic run. But we can't completely rule it out and perhaps it's possible in the future. Though for now if you don't want to wait on ifs and maybes, just make sure you check out the fantasy film on Max.

Does Wonka have a streaming release date on Max yet?

Right now, we don't know when Wonka is going to begin streaming on Max. It's hard to say when exactly Warner Bros. will decide to pull the movie from theaters and make it available online. Many production companies follow a 45 day-ish rule, but it isn't strict and doesn't always happen. It's also going to depend on how well the musical film does in cinemas.

For example the Barbie movie, which is also produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, was released July 9, 2023 in theaters. Though because of its massive success, the film didn't come to streaming on Max until about five months later on Dec. 15. So we'll have to wait and see what happens with Wonka.

When it does happen, we want you to be prepared! So if you don't have a subscription to the platform, here's what you need to know. The streaming service offers three tiers: With Ads for $9.99/month, Ad-Free for $15.99/month, and Ultimate Ad-Free for $19.99/month. Head over to the Max website for a full breakdown of what's included in each subscription package.

You can watch on Max by following these steps:

Of course the talented Chalamet stars as Wonka himself. Joining the actor onscreen are Calah Lane as Noodle; Keegan-Michael Key as the chief of police; Paterson Joseph as Arthur Slugworth; Matt Lucas as Prodnose; Matthew Baynton as Fickelgrube; Sally Hawkins as Willy Wonka's late mother; Rowan Atkinson as Father Julius,; Jim Carter as Abacus Crunch; Olivia Colman as Mrs. Scrubitt; and Hugh Grant as an Oompa-Loompa named Lofty.

Wonka is centered around the titular character and provides the backstory of the "world’s greatest inventor, magician and chocolate-maker" we all know thanks to the Willy Wonka movies that came out in 1971 and 2005, as well as the book that started it all - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. Expect color, music, dancing, and more. Check out the synopsis below:

"Based on the extraordinary, iconic character at the center of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, one of the best-selling children’s books of all time, Wonka tells the wondrous story of how a young chocolate-maker, armed with nothing but a hatful of dreams, manages to change the world, one delectable bite at a time."
