If you have been wanting to watch the movie Dune but aren’t subscribed to the streaming platforms it has been on, Netflix has some great news for you.

Based on the book of the same name by Frank Herbert, Dune hit theaters in October 2021 and was a huge success. Not only did the sci-fi epic starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya make over $400 million at the global box office, but it was also nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

Although the sequel, titled Dune: Part Two, was originally scheduled to hit theaters in November 2023, Warner Bros. opted to push the release date to March 2024 due to the actors’ and writers’ strike, which would have prevented the cast from promoting the sequel.

There’s still a bit of waiting to go before the highly anticipated follow-up film arrives on the big screen, but thankfully, fans will be getting some Dune content this fall. Netflix announced some surprising but exciting news about the movie’s release on the platform.

When is Dune coming to Netflix?

On Sept. 26, Netflix revealed in a social media post that Dune will begin streaming on Sunday, Oct. 1. It’s an unexpected release because Netflix doesn’t often receive some of the biggest new movies from Warner Bros. Rather, the streamer has a movie deal with Sony.

Netflix did recently make a deal with Warner Bros. Discovery to add a select group of HBO shows to its ranks. The deal has so far included Insecure, Ballers, Band of Brothers, and The Pacific. Additional titles could be added in the future.

Last month, Netflix added the 2022 Olivia Wilde-directed film Don’t Worry Darling, which comes from Warner Bros. and made a splash on the top 10. Perhaps given the success of newer movies on the service, Netflix will continue to widen its reach and option more movies.

It’s unclear if the sequel will find its way to Netflix in the distant future following its release on the big screen. But like the first movie, Dune: Part Two is likely to call Max home before streaming elsewhere. Part One is also currently available to stream on Max.

If you would like to own the movie rather than stream it on Netflix or Max, Dune is available for purchase on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD.
