Where to watch two new Ryan Murphy shows (that aren't Netflix's Monsters)
By Reed Gaudens
It's become something of a Ryan Murphy fall on the small screen. The prolific producer who's brought us such generation-defining hits as Popular, Nip/Tuck, Glee, and American Horror Story has debuted quite a bit of new content this fall on Netflix and beyond.
First up, American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez made its premiere on FX and Hulu on Sept. 17, which led right into the Sept. 19 premiere of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story on Netflix. Since they arrived, both shows have been generating headlines, with Monsters rising to the peak of Netflix's most popular shows ranking and creating a lot of conversation online.
Next on Murphy's continued domination of television this season, two high-profile shows arrive on the same exact week. The brand-new horror series Grotesquerie will send a chill down your spine the day before the new procedural drama Doctor Odyssey sets sail. But where can you watch these two latest shows that will definitely be among the fall's biggest? Well, not on Netflix.
Grotesquerie isn't streaming on Netflix
Grotesquerie makes its two-episode premiere on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 10 p.m. ET on FX. The series will also be available to stream the next day on Hulu.
In order to watch on Hulu, you will have to be subscribed to the service. The ad tier costs $7.99 per month, while the ad-free tier costs $17.99 per month. Hulu also offers Live TV plans and bundle deals with Disney+ and with Disney+ and Max.
The series contains 10 episodes and stars Niecy Nash as a detective named Lois Tyron looking into gruesome and unsettling murders occurring around her small town. The case soon makes Lois believe the killer is messing with her, and as she keeps digging in toward the truth, it gets even more chilling.
Take a closer look at what to expect from the series in its official synopsis.
"In Ryan Murphy’s 10-episode drama series Grotesquerie for FX, a series of heinous crimes have unsettled a small community. Detective Lois Tryon feels these crimes are eerily personal, as if someone—or something—is taunting her.
At home, Lois grapples with a strained relationship with her daughter, a husband in long-term hospital care and her own inner demons. With no leads and unsure of where to turn, she accepts the help of Sister Megan, a nun and journalist with the Catholic Guardian. Sister Megan, with her own difficult past, has seen the worst of humanity, yet she still believes in its capacity for good. Lois, on the other hand, fears the world is succumbing to evil. As Lois and Sister Megan string together clues, they find themselves ensnared in a sinister web that only seems to raise more questions than answers."
Along with Nash in the leading role, the series also stars Courtney B. Vance, Lesley Manville, Michaela Diamond, Nicholas Chavez (who also appeared as the co-lead in Monsters), Raven Goodwin, and Kansas City Chiefs tight end and budding actor Travis Kelce. Be warned! Based on the trailer, it's going to be a pretty graphic horror series that's perfect for spooky season.
Doctor Odyssey isn't streaming on Netflix
If you're looking for something a bit lighter than Grotesquerie, then Doctor Odyssey might be more your speed. The new series premieres on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC. The series will also be available to stream on Hulu and on demand the next day.
The new medical drama series stars Joshua Jackson as Max Bankman, who has taken on the role as the doctor aboard a cruise ship. They're in the lap of luxury on the high seas, but that doesn't mean emergencies slow down in the middle of the ocean. Think of Doctor Odyssey as 9-1-1 meets Grey's Anatomy but set on a cruise ship. Doesn't that sound like fun?
Here's the show's official synopsis via ABC:
"From the brilliant mind of Ryan Murphy comes high-octane procedural Doctor Odyssey. Max (Joshua Jackson) is the new on-board doctor for a luxury cruise ship where the staff works hard and plays harder. It’s all-hands-on-deck as Max and his small but mighty medical team navigate unique medical crises and each other, miles from shore."
Jackson leads the main cast that also includes Don Johnson, Phillipa Soo, and Netflix's Mother of the Bride star Sean Teale. A number of high-profile guest stars have already been announced for the first season, such as Shania Twain, John Stamos, Kelsea Ballerini, Gina Gershon, Cheyenne Jackson, and more. This one's sure to be among the fall seasons biggest new shows.
While Grotesquerie and Doctor Odyssey won't be available to stream on Netflix for the foreseeable future, you never know what could happen. If you would like to watch some horror shows on Netflix, fill your watch list with The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher. For some medical dramas on Netflix, watch Grey's Anatomy, The Resident, and Breathless.
