For the first time ever, Carrie Bradshaw and her best friends will have a second streaming home. A vacation streaming home, if you will. The complete original Sex and the City series drops on Netflix in April 2024, and it's the very first time the series will stream somewhere other than Max or any of HBO's previous streaming entities.
Back in January, rumors of Sex and the City's imminent arrival on Netflix swirled online, previewing what would become one of the streamer's biggest acquisitions in what could definitely be dubbed its acquisition era. Netflix has always licensed content from other studios, but its placed a greater effort lately by making deals with HBO and Disney.
No one would have thought that Carrie Bradshaw would have ever been in the market for a move to Netflix, even if the pair of Sex and the City movies have frequently been housed on the streamer. It's a huge get, and the series will be a huge hit on Netflix when it arrives at the top of April. You might have watched the series a million times, but why not grab a cosmo and make it a million and one?
Sex and the City releases on Netflix on April 1
All six seasons of the HBO hit series Sex and the City will be released on Netflix on Monday, April 1, and that's no April Fool's Day joke. As with every new release title on the platform, the series will drop at midnight PDT and 3 a.m. EDT. If you happen to be awake at those times, you can get a jump on your rewatch in the middle of the night.
Because the show is so widely available, both on Max and in syndication on cable, it's unlikely that anyone will be watching the second the show lands on Netflix. But there are definitely plenty of fans who will be promptly starting rewatches on April 1, whether or not they're also subscribed to Max. For some who don't have Max, this might be the first chance to watch the show in a while!
Of course, after the show ended its run after six seasons in 2004, the characters returned for the movies Sex and the City (2008) and Sex and the City 2 (2010). While the first movie was a blockbuster that many view as classic as the series, the second wasn't as big of a hit critically or commerically. A planned third film never ended up materializing due to behind the scenes disagreements.
Ultimately, Sex and the City would later make a comeback in the form of the 2021 revival series And Just Like That, which is a Max original series and won't be making the leap to Netflix with its sire series. Kim Cattrall didn't join Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon for the polarizing continuation series that expanded the universe and made big swings.
No matter how you feel about And Just Like That, you have to admit that Sex and the City will always be iconic. Now we can relive all of the moments, the crazy dates and encounters, the sticky note breakup, the love and friendship, and everything that makes this show such a beloved pop culture staple. Rewatch all 94 episodes or finally give the show a shot and weigh in on Big vs. Aidan.
