The current movie at the top of the Netflix Top 10 movies list is a great new chapter in the slasher genre. Thanksgiving, a film by Eli Roth, was released in November 2023 and was recently added to the Netflix list of horror films. This is a must-see for true slasher fans, and we have a few other recommendations within this genre to check out this week.

Thanksgiving (2023)

Thanksgiving is the third feature-length adaptation of trailers featured in Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's Grindhouse movie. This was Roth's contribution to Grindhouse, and Thanksgiving expands the premise of that trailer.

Set in Plymouth, Massachusetts, on Thanksgiving, the 2023 movie begins as shoppers prepare for Black Friday shopping at the RightMart superstore. The crowd stampedes the store, and the day ends in tragedy, which one year later spawns a string of killings by a man wearing a mask of one of the Mayflower pilgrims, John Carver. In true slasher spirit, the film features a great meld of comedy and gore. The film does have a sequel in the works.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)

The ninth installment of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise was released in 2022 and directed by David Blue Garcia. This film takes place 50 years after Leatherface's original killing spree in 1973. A group of young adults travel to the town of Harlow, which has now been abandoned. They plan to gentrify the area by selling off the properties within the town to renovate the ghost town into a place for people to make a fresh start.

Of course, Leatherface isn't happy with the mass of people unsettling his quiet life and makes this known by beginning another killing spree, just as fans would have it. While this film didn't receive great reviews, it is entertaining, and many have said this is one of the films in the franchise that they rooted for the Leathface.

The Conference (2023)

The Netflix original The Conference is a Swedish comedy horror that follows a group of municipal workers on retreat to build morale and celebrate an office milestone. Based on the bestselling Swedish novel by Mats Strandberg, the movie focuses on the dysfunction of office workers, but quickly takes a turn when a mysterious killer begins picking off hotel workers in a booby-trapped, backstabbing bloodbath. Will the office workers be next?

The Strangers (2008)

The Strangers, directed by Bryan Bertino, will leave the streamer on Feb. 29. So it's the perfect time to watch. The film is a psychological thriller with enough gore to be considered a slasher. The story follows a young couple staying in a vacation home who become terrorized by three masked strangers.

The movie was inspired by the Manson Family Tate murders and events of break-ins that happened in Bertino's childhood neighborhood. Since its release, the film has become a cult classic, and the sequel, The Strangers: Prey at Night, was released in 2018, with a third movie in production.

The Bye Bye Man (2017)

The Bye Bye Man is based on a single chapter of Robert Damon Schneck's book The President's Vampire, titled "The Bridge to Body Island." The story follows three college students who move into an off-campus house. Here they come upon the origins of a local boogy man known as the Bye Bye Man whose name must never be spoken or thought of finding them resighting "Don't say it, don't think it; don't think it, don't say it."
