By Renee Hansen
This week, many celebrate Valentine's Day with romantic movies, of which Netflix has a massive selection. Other people aren't so keen on this genre and will instead choose to watch horror movies. This list highlights several horrors with some romance thrown in; check out our recommendations.
Lover, Stalker, Killer
The No. 1 movie on Netflix's Top 10 list is the recently released Lover, Stalker, Killer, which sounds like a great movie for Valentine's week. The really scary part is that it is a documentary based on the true story of Dave Kroupa, a mechanic who was looking for companionship online and got more than he bargained for. He would meet a woman on the Plenty of Fish dating site and later begin dating another woman he met when she brought the car in for repairs. This would begin a strange love triangle that ends in murder.
Crimson Peak
The 2015 gothic romance Crimson Peak was directed by Guillermo del Toro, who co-wrote the story with Matthew Robbins. The movie stars Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, Charlie Hunnam, and Jim Beaver in a story set in Edwardian-era England. The story tells of a married couple who, along with his sister, travels to a Gothic Mansion in Cumberland, England. While there, the wife begins seeing ghostly visions, prompting her to discover the mystery behind them.
Death Note
Death Note is a supernatural crime thriller film inspired by the manga by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. Directed by Adam Wingard, the movie stars Nat Wolff, LaKeith Stanfield, Margaret Qualley, Shea Whigham, Paul Nakauchi, Jason Liles, and Willem Dafoe. The story, written by Charles Parlapanides, Vlas Parlapanides, and Jeremy Slater, tells of a high school student, Light Turner (Wolff), who comes into possession of a supernatural notebook, the Death Note. The book can kill anyone whose name is written within its pages. Under the name Kira, Turner begins using the book to kill criminals while Stanfield's L, a detective, actively searches for the murderer.
The Invitation
The Invitation, directed by Jessica M. Thompson, her second feature film, and written by Blair Butler, gets its inspriation from Dracula written by Bram Stoker. After the death of her mother, young woman takes a DNA test which introduces her to long lost family members who live in England. She travels to England, on the invitation of her cousin, where she uncovers deep dark secrets of the family she has never known.
Night Teeth
Vampire thrillers always showcase some type of romance, which is the case with the Netflix original Night Teeth. Directed by Adam Randall, the movie stars Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Debby Ryan, Lucy Fry, Raul Castillo, Sydney Sweeney, Megan Fox, and Alfie Allen. A young driver picks up two women who have planned a night of party hopping. He will then be forced to fight for his life when their true nature is revealed.
