Are you excited for a new season of SWAT? Well, the seventh season will be coming to our screens very soon, and it's sure to be another action-packed and unmissable season for fans of the crime procedural series. And we have good news! CBS just decided to reverse its cancellation decision for a second time, meaning the seventh season is no longer the last season! It will be back for season 8.

Thankfully, after the seventh season wraps up its run on CBS, all of the episodes will make their way to Netflix and join the rest of the six seasons of the show. But when does SWAT season 7 begin airing on CBS, and when could it begin streaming on Netflix? Also, what can fans expect? Here's everything to know before the new season kicks off!

  1. SWAT season 7 premiere date
  2. When could season 7 be on Netflix?
  3. Cast
  4. Plot details and spoilers

SWAT season 7 premiere date

The seventh season will premiere on Friday, Feb. 16, 2024 at 8/7c on CBS. Before landing on Netflix later this year, each new episode of SWAT season 7 will be available for streaming live (with a particular tier) and next-day on Paramount+ during the season. The seventh season began filming back in December 2023.

As previously mentioned, this season will consist of 13 episodes, which is markedly down from each previous seasons' 22-episode orders. Apart from pandemic-impacted seasons 3 and 4, which had 21 and 18 episodes respectively, each season has had 22 episodes (or even 23 like season 2). But it's nothing short of a miracle that season 7 has happened at all.

While the seventh season was impacted by the actors' and writers' strikes, the 13-episode season had been decided in May 2023. CBS initially canceled the series after season 6 when negotiations between CBS and the show's producer Sony fell apart. However, due to fan demand and criticism from its stars, a deal was struck three days after the cancellation for a shorter season, previously thought to be the final until the recent renewal.

When could season 7 be on Netflix?

It would be shocking if the seventh season wasn't added to Netflix. All six seasons were a hit on Netflix and the series hails from The Night Agent creator Shawn Ryan. We're anticipating season 7 to be one of the biggest acquired new releases to hit Netflix in 2024.

Last year, the first five seasons of the series were added to Netflix ahead of the season 6 finale in May. Following the season 6 finale on May 19, all 22 episodes of season 6 were added on Netflix on Sept. 1, which was about a four-month wait. We should expect SWAT season 7 to come to Netflix about four months after its televised finale on Netflix.

Currently, CBS has not announced the series finale date, though considering the season premieres on Feb. 16 and contains 13 episodes, you can pretty much do the math. The series finale should air sometime in May 2024 along with the other finale dates the network has set so far. Being so, we anticipate season 7 to be on Netflix sometime in fall 2024, potentially even September again. Of course, the season could also drop before or after our prediction.

Cast

Even though the series has experienced some cast changes throughout the years with a few departures, no main cast members are expected to depart SWAT ahead of the seventh season. Of course, Shemar Moore will be back as the lead of the series along with the reason of the season 6 main cast members. Fans will definitely be keeping their fingers crossed for any potential returns or cameos from past characters.

Here's the season 7 main cast:

  • Shemar Moore as Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson
  • Alex Russell as Jim Street
  • Kenny Johnson as Dominique Luca
  • Jay Harrington as David "Deacon" Kay
  • David Lim as Victor Tan
  • Patrick St. Esprit as Robert Hicks
  • Rochelle Aytes as Nichelle Carmichael

While it's not explicitly stated in TV Line's article teasing the season 7 premiere, the outlet seems to suggest that season 6 recurring player Anna Enger Ritch, who plays Powell in the series, has been promoted to series regular for season 7. For further confirmation on Ritch's role on the series, we'll have to wait on official word, though it still seems as though she will play a large part in the seventh season.

Plot details and spoilers

As revealed by TV Line, the opening episode of the seventh season will take place in Mexico City, Mexico. Andrew Dettmann, the showrunner, also teased that Powell will "take some lumps" as she accompanies Hondo and Hicks in the action-packed adventure. But don't fret! Dettmann also confirmed that Powell will also "get to kick some a--."

The first two episodes of the seventh season will also be a two-part episode as further teased by TV Line, but to hold fans over, here's the official synopsis of the season premiere:

"The team heads to Mexico to escort a fugitive back to the States when things go awry and Hondo has to save an old witness tied to the case"
"The Promise" (season 7 episode 1)

As fans know, the sixth season concluded with Hondo proposing to Nichelle, and it's expected that the seventh season will feature their wedding at some point. What better way for the show to go out than with the joy of a wedding? For now, check out a super short and bittersweet teaser for the seventh season's "one last mission" that's sure to make devoted fans emotional. (Except now we know it's NOT the last mission!).
