No, Saltburn isn’t on Netflix but you can stream it right now if you dare
Director Emerald Fennell had a big year in 2023. Not only did she appear in Greta Gerwig's Barbie as Midge (a.k.a. the now-discontinued pregnant Barbie) but her second feature-length film Saltburn was also released in theaters. Similar to her first movie Promising Young Woman, Saltburn has been met with a wide range of reactions. Some people think it's cringe-worthy, while others are calling it a masterpiece. No matter what side of the debate you fall on, there's no denying this movie is attracting a lot of attention.
Saltburn stars Barry Keoghan (The Banshees of Inisherin) as a student at Oxford named Oliver who forms a deep obsession with one of his classmates, Felix, played by Jacob Elordi (Priscilla). As the movie begins, Oliver's narration tells the viewer that he wasn't "in love" with Felix before questioning his statement. The movie follows their close friendship starting at school which blossoms when Felix invites Oliver to spend the summer with him at his wealthy family's estate. This is a dream come true for Oliver, but as the movie progresses we learn he might have malevolent intentions.
Saltburn is streaming on Amazon Prime Video
Unfortunately for Netflix users, Saltburn is not streaming on the platform. That said, you can watch it right now on Amazon Prime Video. The movie was just added to the streamer in late December and has been very successful, debuting in the no. 1 spot in the U.S. Top 10. Saltburn is nominated at the 2024 Golden Globes
The reason I mentioned the Golden Globes earlier is because Saltburn is up for awards at the 81st ceremony, taking place this Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024. Honestly, I wasn't expecting the movie to receive any nominations given how divisive the response has been, but it's not completely unsurprising given that Promising Young Woman was nominated for multiple Golden Globe Awards (including Best Motion Picture - Drama) and Fennell even won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
Saltburn isn't up for as many Golden Globe Awards as Promising Young Woman was, but Keoghan and Rosamund Pike are both nominated for acting awards. Keoghan is nominated for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama, while Pike is up for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture. As much as I love this movie, I don't see either actor taking home the award, unfortunately. There's just too much competition!
That's not to say Keoghan and Pike didn't give stellar performances in Saltburn, though. Their performances as Oliver and Elspeth, respectively, were two of my favorites of 2023! But it was an incredible year for movies. Keoghan is up against the likes of Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) and Bradley Cooper (Maestro), while Pike is competing against Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Julianne Moore (May December), and others in her category. Still, just the fact that they are nominated is awesome.
Saltburn is a really fun and entertaining movie, but it's definitely not for everyone. If you're looking for a great movie starring Keoghan that is streaming on Netflix, we'd recommend The Killing of a Sacred Deer. But again, like with Saltburn — but for different reasons — proceed with caution!
