Another awards season is upon us and that means it’s time to look ahead to the early months of 2024 and the many shows, movies, and performances that are in contention for major prizes. On December 11, 2023, the nominations for the 2024 Golden Globes were announced and Netflix received more than 20 noms for projects like Beef, Maestro, Nyad, The Crown, Rustin, The Diplomat, and May December.

Netflix has had a decent year in 2023, though slightly more so with films than shows. Thankfully, the streaming service had at least a few, like the buzzy A24 miniseries Beef, to fall back on now that awards season has officially come around. Even former heavy-hitters like the period drama The Crown got its usual love from voters, securing noms for Dominic West’s work as King Charles III, Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana, and Best Drama.

As is usual for the Golden Globes, the nominations weren’t without a few surprises, perhaps the biggest of all being that Netflix’s miniseries All the Light We Cannot See received a nod for Best Television Limited Series despite not making much of a splash and generating mostly negative reviews from critics. In a far more pleasant surprise, Keri Russell received a nomination for her brilliant work in the political drama The Diplomat and the show itself got a Best Drama nod.

I was curious if any of the controversy surrounding Beef would limit its nomination chances, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Another really pleasant surprise was the fact The Fall of the House of Usher got a nom! Carla Gugino was exceptional on the show so I’m thrilled for her, though I wish some of the other cast members had gotten nominated as well.

In the animation category, Nimona got snubbed, though two of the nominees: The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse are both available to stream on the service right now. No Hard Feelings is also streaming.

Society of the Snow, Netflix’s sole Best Picture, Non-English Language nominee, will be released on January 4, 2024.
