Who is Netflix going to call? Ghostbusters! After the latest film in the franchise became a huge streaming hit on the platform, Netflix has officially given the green light to an upcoming Ghostbusters animated series, as Variety reports.
The new animated series in the expansive film and television franchise has been in the works since 2022, when word of its development was first announced. Likely, the success of the two latest movies, Afterlife and Frozen Empire, tipped the series over the edge.
Netflix's as of yet untitled animated series becomes the the third animated Ghostbusters series following 1986's The Real Ghostbusters and 1997's Extreme Ghostbusters. The former produced 140 episodes while the latter produced just 40. Netflix hasn't revealed an episode count for season 1.
While the show has become official, exact details on its plot haven't been revealed either. According to Variety, the tone of the series will mirror that of Afterlife and Frozen Empire, though the 3D animated series' connection to those titles, if any at all, isn't known.
Netflix's Ghosbusters animated series comes from movie team
Netflix's new Ghostbusters animated series comes from Sony Pictures Animation and counts Afterlife director Jason Reitman and Frozen Empire director Gil Kenan as executive producers. Emmy Award-nominated writer Elliott Kalan will act as the series' showrunner.
Kalan previously served as the head writer on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, where he earned his Emmy nominations. In addition, Kalan has also worked with Netflix in the past, having also been the head writer for the streamer's Mystery Science Theater 3000 revival. He clearly has an eye for comedy with a point of view. Ghostbusters fans are in good hands!
The upcoming Ghostbusters animated series is just one of the animated series Netflix has in the works. The streamer also ordered an animated series based on the hit video game Minecraft and will team up with Community and Rick and Morty creator Dan Harmon for The Undervale.
The Ghostbusters franchise came back with a vengeance in 2021 with the release of Ghostbuters: Afterlife, which stars Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and Mckenna Grace. The team got back together with the original classic's cast for 2024's Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
Thanks to Netflix's streaming deal with Sony, Frozen Empire landed on the streaming platform over the summer and enjoyed a successful second life after its theatrical run. The sequel hit the peak of the daily top 10 most popular movies ranking and clocked in a decent tenure.
Without giving too much away, a mid-credits scene in Frozen Empire teased Mini-Puffs, which could be the jumping off point for a potential film sequel or even the upcoming animated series. Wouldn't that be an interesting story to tell in the Netflix series?
We'll have to wait and see what Netflix has in store for its Ghostbusters series, including its title. There haven't been any cast or character announcements, and the streamer also hasn't clued us in on a potential release timeframe, but we can seemingly expect the show to drop sometime in 2025 or later.
