Netflix weekend watch list (Aug. 2): Unstable, Sandy Cheeks, and more!
By Reed Gaudens
It's finally the weekend, which just so happens to coincide with the beginning of August. The start of a new month always brings dozens of new releases to Netflix, and it can be overwhelming to learn what's been added to the streamer and what should be added to your watch list.
On the first of August, Netflix dropped so many great new releases, including Fire Country season 1, Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color, two Dr. Seuss movies, multiple Chucky movies and more horror, White Chicks, The Spectacular Now, and plenty of great picks for a binge-watch weekend.
In the spirit of the Olympics and watching Simone Biles win gold, you could bypass the new releases and check out the first two episodes of the Olympic gymnast's documentary series Simone Biles Rising. More new releases, like Unsolved Mysteries and Prison Break, are also in the top 10.
Beyond these titles above, there's so much more to watch on Netflix this weekend. An underrated Netflix original comedy returns, a family and an action movie vie for movie night, and a twisty murder mystery's already a breakout hit. Here's what to check out on Netflix the weekend of Aug. 2, 2024.
Unstable season 2
Rob Lowe and John Owen Lowe are back with a brand-new season of Unstable, the quirky father-son comedy that's way too underrated. In the series, Lowe plays a billionaire biotech CEO whose estranged son begrudgingly joins the family business.
While some might have written the show off for whatever reason, don't! It's so much more than just a meta father-son story. It's that, sure, but there's also an excellent ensemble that makes the series a well-oiled workplace comedy. Watch all 16 episodes of Unstable this weekend!
Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie
After 25 years of SpongeBob SquarePants, Sandy Cheeks finally gets the spotlight in the brand-new Netflix original movie Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie. The squirrel and the sponge team up in Texas to help save their underwater home. But you don't even need to know what the movie's about to make it a must-watch for family movie night.
Jack Reacher
Both Jack Reacher and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back were added to Netflix on Aug. 1, and it didn't take long for the 2016 sequel to shot straight to the peak of the daily top 10 most popular movies ranking. Need an action movie fix? Have a back-to-back double feature of the Tom Cruise action movies while they're available to watch on Netflix.
A Good Girl's Guide to Murder
Like Jack Reacher, this particular title skyrocketed to popularity after only one day of availability on Netflix. A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, which is based on the best-selling book series and stars Wednesday actress Emma Myers, already hit the No. 1 spot of the top 10.
The teen mystery series follows a teenager as she looks into a past murder case that doesn't quite add up and tries to track down the real killer. A Good Girl's Guide to Murder contains six episodes and makes for a captivating weekend watch. Plus, follow along with our recaps!
