Did Sony inadvertently let the cat out of the bag on when Cobra Kai's final season will be released on Netflix? Well, if you read between the lines of a new report from Variety on Sony's shifting film release slate, then you can sense a potential release window for the hit Netflix martial arts series.

As reported by Variety, Sony has moved two key film releases around the schedule for the forthcoming year. The Marvel superhero film Kraven the Hunter starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson has moved from its Aug. 30, 2024 release date to Dec. 13, taking over the slot previously occupied by Karate Kid. In turn, Karate Kid has been moved to May 30, 2025.

In the report, Variety specifically notes that Karate Kid "will now bow in theaters after the sixth and final season of Cobra Kai debuts on Netflix." Interesting, interesting! Netflix recently confirmed that Cobra Kai season 6 will be released in the second half of 2024, but the upcoming sixth Karate Kid movie moving out of its way to May 2025 gives us a better idea of a release window.

Filming on the final season began back in February 2024 and production's expected to last through July, according to What's on Netflix. Realistically, that production and post-production timeline puts season 6 on track for a release by late fall or even December. Cobra Kai's fifth season dropped in September 2022 and the fourth season released on Dec. 31, 2021. September could be too soon, but who knows, we could be in store for another holiday season release for the fan-favorite series.

More than likely, Karate Kid's move on Sony's schedule has less to do about Cobra Kai's release date and more to do with the fact that the movie starring Jackie Chan didn't start filming until April 2024. Sure, the movie could have probably made the quick turnaround for a December release, but it's a tight squeeze. Still... avoiding a conflict with the Karate Kid sequel series makes sense, too.

No matter the reason, it's a smart move on Sony's part to prevent Karate Kid exhaustion among fans of the franchise. Releasing a new movie at the same time Netflix releases the final season of a beloved series from the franchise would probably cancel one of them out. Postponing the movie allows for fans to start to miss the franchise and want more by May 2025.

For now, we're going to predict that Cobra Kai season 6 could have a potential release in December 2024. If it's not released around the same time the film was intended to hit theaters (Dec. 13), then we can definitely expect it to karate chop into our watch lists within a couple weeks of that date. Obviously, fans want the season ASAP and don't want to wait until December. We have to be patient!
