How Netflix ruined Bridgerton season 3's chances at major Emmy nominations

By splitting the season into two parts, the period romance is not eligible for the 2024 Emmys.

I'll be the first to say that awards shows are not everything. There's many times when the projects that win maybe shouldn't have, or a certain movie or series deserved more recognition. There's also always so many snubs. But, the ceremonies are still important in recognizing the work and talent of productions, and we love to see our favorite shows nominated. Unfortunately, Netflix has ruined the chances of Bridgerton season 3 to even be nominated for the 2024 Emmys.

First let me explain 2024 Emmys because some of you may be confused. I know we just had the awards show in January 2024. Due to the writers and actors strikes, the Television Academy decided to postpone the 2023 ceremony (75th Emmys) from September 2023 and aired it in January 2024 instead. Because of this, we're actually getting to Emmy Awards shows this year.

So, the 76th Emmys will air in September 2024, meaning we're back to the regular schedule. Ok, so why can't Bridgerton be nominated? Because there are rules and deadlines to be eligible for nominations. A series can be considered if it premiered between June 1, 2023 an May 31, 2024 and had at least six episodes come out during that time.

Bridgerton season 3 could have been eligible for the 2024 Emmys if Netflix planned to release all eight episodes of the season at once instead of splitting the season into two parts. All of them could have premiered on May 16, 2024. Instead, Bridgerton season 3 will stream the first four episodes that day, followed by the final four episodes on June 13. And so, it doesn't meet the six-episode minimum requirement to be eligible for the awards show this year. Up until July 2022, a series could still be considered even if its season finale was after the May 31 deadline as long as the season premiered between June and May. But that rule is no longer.

That means our favorite period romance will have to wait until the 2025 Emmy Awards to be considered. It's a shame that Netflix didn't think about the Emmys beforehand because the show could have had a really good shot at winning this year. There's alway stiff competition. But because of the strikes and delays in production for many projects, those other shows wouldn't have been eligible and Bridgerton would have had a higher chance at winning. With it potentially being nominated in 2025, it's going to face many more projects that usually take the wins.

I'm really disappointed honestly. The third season is one of the most highly-anticipated shows on Netflix, and really for the whole year of television! Penelope and Colin's love story is so intriguing, dripping in mystery and secrets. How will this author deal with it all? Bridgerton is one of the best shows out there, and I know season 3 has so much potential. It's going to be great and deserve all the awards.

Bridgerton season 1 was nominated in three categories, but did not win any of them. Those were Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series - Regé-Jean Page, and Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series - Julie Anne Robinson.
