Dakota Johnson's latest film to be released in theaters is the superhero film Madame Web, and after watching this movie, many people are in the mood to watch more of her content. Fortunately, Netflix already carries a couple of Dakota's movies and will soon carry what we'd say is her most underrated movie ever. Yes, we're talking about How to Be Single. It's set to be released on Netflix on April 1.
Dakota has made quite an acting career over the years. Many of us know her best from her lead role as Anastasia Steele in the erotic Fifty Shades film series. However, she had previously had minor roles in films such as Crazy in Alabama, The Social Network, 21 Jump Street, The Five-Year Engagement and Need for Speed.
After her breakout role as Anastasia in the Fifty Shades movies, Dakota went on to star in movies like the crime drama Black Mass, the comedy-drama The Peanut Butter Falcon, the drama The Lost Daughter and the romantic drama Cha Cha Real Smooth. But out of all of her movies, the one that I always tend to go back and rewatch every couple of years is the romantic comedy How to Be Single.
It's loosely based on Liz Tuccillo's 2008 novel of the same name. The movie follows a group of young women in New York City as they navigate love and relationships. After four years of college, Alice is on a mission to discover who she really is, so she temporarily dumps her boyfriend and moves to New York. While there, she stays with her older sister Meg, who just wants to have fun without any commitment. She also meets her Australian co-worker, Robin, the life of the party and someone who helps her embrace being single. Last but not least is the romantic hopeful Lucy, who's looking for her soulmate by using various dating sites.
Dakota portrays the lead role of Alice in the rom-com. Joining her in the cast are Leslie Mann as Meg, Rebel Wilson as Robin, and Alison Brie as Lucy. Damon Wayans Jr., Anders Holm, Nicholas Braun, Jake Lacy, and Jason Mantzoukas are also in the talented cast. When it comes to the creative team behind How to Be Single, German director and film producer Christian Ditter helmed the film from a screenplay co-written by Abby Kohn, Marc Silverstein, and Dana Fox.
Although the film received mixed reviews from critics, it still managed to be a box office hit, grossing $112 million worldwide against a $38 million budget. That's definitely impressive for a movie in the rom-com genre.
Here are some audience responses to How to Be Single via Rotten Tomatoes:

"Super fun and funny! The ultimate feel good movie!"Farah A (viewer)
"Entertaining. Some very strong female leads coupled with some very good supporting male actors. It doesn't break "new" ground but does throw a couple of twists in that make it worth the watch."Anonymous viewer
