The Lost Daughter is a movie written and directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal. It’s based on the novel of the same name by Elena Ferrante. The amazingly cast lineup includes some familiar faces such as Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley, Dakota Johnson, Peter Sarsgaard, Ed Harris, Paul Mescal, Dagmara Domińczyk, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Jack Farthing, and Alba Rohrwacher.

The drama film had its world premiere at the 78th Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2021. It’s scheduled to have a limited theater release in the US on Dec. 17, 2021, before making its way to Netflix on Dec. 31. Dec. 31 is right around the corner, so to gear up for The Lost Daughter‘s release on Netflix, we will share with you the movie’s synopsis down below.

What is The Lost Daughter about?

This film is about a middle-aged woman named Leda, who finds herself becoming obsessed with a young mother and daughter while on summer vacation in a small coastal town in southern Italy. Her obsession with this mother and daughter forces Leda to confront the secrets of her past.

Take a look at the official synopsis via Netflix below:

"Alone on a seaside vacation, Leda (Olivia Colman) becomes consumed with a young mother and daughter as she watches them on the beach. Unnerved by their compelling relationship, (and their raucous and menacing extended family), Leda is overwhelmed by her own memories of the terror, confusion and intensity of early motherhood. An impulsive act shocks Leda into the strange and ominous world of her own mind, where she is forced to face the unconventional choices she made as a young mother and their consequences."

After looking at this trailer, I think this film might be competing with The Unforgivable as the best drama of 2021. Everything starts off so innocent and quickly becomes intense and dark. I wonder how this film will play out because the protagonist doesn’t seem too sane. I guess we’ll find out when The Lost Daughter drops on Netflix on Dec. 31.

The Lost Daughter will make its landing on Netflix on Dec. 31 at 12:01 a.m. PT/3:01 a.m. ET. Will you be watching?
