Bad news for fans of Netflix's real estate reality series universe: A fan-favorite title was just put on the market. Unfortunately, Buying Beverly Hills was canceled by Netflix after two seasons. Don't let the "on the market" pun fool you, though. The series isn't being shopped to another streamer or network.

Buying Beverly Hills first made its premiere on Netflix in November 2022 and returned for its much more dramatic and talked about second season in March 2024. The real estate series followed the personal and professional life of Mauricio Umansky and his staff and fellow real estate agents at The Agency.

In season 2, the series traced the dramas in Umansky's split from Real Housewives star and Halloween actress Kyle Richards. The series also starred three of their four daughters, Farrah Brittany and Alexia Umansky, who work with Mauricio at The Agency, with Sophia Umanksy joining in season 2.

By all accounts, Buying Beverly Hills appeared to be a hit reality series for Netflix along with the likes of Selling Sunset and its spinoff Selling the OC, Owning Manhattan, and Buying London. So, if its placement in the top 10 and headline-grabbing storylines wasn't enough, what went wrong?

Why Buying Beverly Hills was likely canceled

According to Deadline, Buying Beverly Hills was canceled due to the cost of producing the series compared to the viewership numbers it was bringing in. Netflix often compares the cost and ratings of its original content when deciding what to renew and what to cancel.

More than likely, Buying Beverly Hills was becoming too pricey to make with its growing roster of talent and filming locations in Los Angeles while not pulling Selling Sunset numbers.

The first season of the series hit the top 10 in almost 10 countries, while the second season reached new heights by getting into the top 10 in 18 countries and spending one week in the Global Top 10 TV (English) ranking. While that's an improvement from season 1, the amount of gossip sites writing about the Umansky-Richards split didn't necessarily translate to huge global ratings.

Based on the amount of attention season 2 received at the time, Buying Beverly Hills season 3 seemed like a safe bet for renewal, but you can never truly predict these things, especially in reality television on streaming.

In spite of the show's cancellation, real estate reality shows remain a hot ticket on Netflix, as Selling Sunset season 8 drops in September and Selling the OC will be back for season 3.
