Anyone But You earns its R-rating from the shower scenes, nudity, and other explicit moments

Let's just say it's not a romantic comedy for the whole family.

Sometimes you can get away with watching a romantic comedy with the whole family for movie night, but other times, you have to be mindful of the rating before pressing "play" on Netflix. Anyone But You is definitely one of those cases of checking the rating before parking the family in front of the TV with some popcorn.

The romantic comedy starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell made its Netflix debut in April 2024 following a blockbuster performance at the box office, where it made over $200 million worldwide. For those keeping score at home, that's huge for a rom-com. And it's especially huge for a romantic comedy that's rated R.

What's behind the hit movie's R rating? Anyone But You has been rated R for language, sexual content, and brief graphic nudity. But how graphic is it? It's graphic enough that it's definitely not appropriate or suitable for younger viewers. Below we're breaking down how explicit the language and nudity really is, including the shower scenes that will have people talking.

Warning: Minor spoilers ahead from the movie!

Heightened language

Like any R-rated movie, Anyone But You has heightened language. Apart from the usual low-level words that aren't found in children's programming, the movie also uses more than a few elevated profanities that younger ears typically don't hear. Of course, use your best judgment for what's appropriate for your family, though be warned that the language isn't PG.

Yes, there's graphic nudity

Compared to other movies featuring graphic nudity, the nudity in Anyone But You isn't as explicit. However, there are some brief moments that are explicit. There are instances of male and female rear nudity, as well as a couple instances of female topless nudity.

In a hiking scene, two characters touch each other's butts in a moment that's played for laughs, and Glen Powell's character strips naked. His backside is visible in both close range and from far away. While he's naked, the camera doesn't pan lower than his waist, though it's still suggestive.

In another scene feature Joe Davidson's character showering, there are brief glimpses of his backside as well as his pubic region. Toward the end of the scene, he flashes the tip of his penis. It's quick moment that's easy to miss if you aren't paying attention.

A pivotal shower scene finds Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney's characters showering together and kissing. There's very brief and subtle nudity before the scene cuts to Ben and Bea kissing bed. In spite of its R rating, the sex scenes aren't too over the top or overly graphic in comparison to other R-rated romantic comedies, including director Will Gluck's Friends with Benefits.

Anyone But You is currently available to stream on Netflix.
