As an OG fan of A Discovery of Witches, it makes me so happy to see that the show is getting the attention it deserves and a new life on Netflix. Originally an AMC series, this is one of 13 shows from the network that have been added to Netflix recently. And to no surprise on my end, the fantasy drama has been a constant on Netflix's Top 10 row.

Now this might not be a Netflix Original, but even when the streamer decides to add a series that is new to Netflix subscribers, you might be wondering if it's too mature. Sometimes when a production is given a TV-MA rating, I feel like it's more out of precaution. After all, there's a whole system in place to determine the age rating for movies and shows. So where does A Discovery of Witches lie?

A Discovery of Witches' TV-MA age rating is a bit much, but still beware

So officially, the series holds a TV-MA age rating, which means there might be content that isn't suitable for those who are under the age of 17. This includes graphic violence, explicit sexual activity, and indecent language. In my opinion, I think those a bit younger than 17 would be fine watching the show. Like maybe around 15 years old would be ok. Though it depends on your comfort level as a parent/guardian. Let's dive into how graphic and violent it is.

Sex and nudity

When it comes to sex scenes, there's a few in A Discovery of Witches season 1 (the show has a total of three seasons), as well as subsequent seasons. The first season I would say has the most and the ones that would be considered more graphic. But, they're not too bad or long. But, there is oral sex portrayed, for example. There will be some shirtless and seduction-like scenes as well.

Though when you compare the scenes to maybe other shows and movies out there that feature sex scenes, it's not as bad. I think maybe if a teenager around 15 years and older was watching, it might already be something they're exposed to and I don't think it would bee too graphic for them.

Language and violence

There is some indecent language used, in particular the 'f bomb,' especially in A Discovery of Witches season 2. Again, overall not too bad. But there is some mature language involved. I would say that the violence isn't too graphic, but there is quite a bit of it. This is a story that involves vampires after all.

There's multiple scenes with blood and vampires using humans, or animals, to feed on. There's a scene where two witches are fighting, and one is badly injured and there's a focus on her injuries visually. There's also a decapitated woman who's still alive only with her head.

In A Discovery of Witches season 3, one character is bloodthirsty and has a difficult time controlling his urges. This leads to some graphic and violent scenes. The first season also features the murder of two characters, and the way they were found dead is bloody and graphic. There's also a few characters who die, so there are talks of death and grief.

Drinking and drugs

There really isn't much drinking and drugs in the show. The characters usually just drink wine but no drunkenness is shown. Hopefully this parents guide helps you out!

All three seasons of A Discovery of Witches are now streaming on Netflix.
