On top of a repeat Super Bowl match up and presidential race from 2020, the current year also shares another striking similarity with 2020: Leap Year. Every four years, February gets an extra day, and on Feb. 29, 2024, we're getting that extra day. What does one do to ring in Leap Day? How about watching some movies and shows on Netflix?

Unfortunately, a number of classic Leap Day titles aren't available on Netflix, including the romantic comedy Leap Year and hilarious episodes from shows like 30 Rock, Modern Family, and Parks and Recreation. But that doesn't mean there aren't amazing shows and movies on Netflix to add to our watch list for 2024's special day.

While we can't watch those sitcoms on Leap Day, one of the most popular comedies on Netflix leading up to Feb. 29 happens to be Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Leap Day also marks the last day to watch Dune on Netflix, and it's just in time for the sequel to release the next day. What else is there to watch on Netflix for Leap Day? Here's three movie and three show recommendations!

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Just ahead of Leap Day, Netflix added the first four seasons of the police comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The series once called Netflix home but left a while back, making its grand return all the more exciting for fans. Of course, the only downside is it's not the complete series, as the remaining four seasons aren't yet on Netflix. The zany fictional precinct may not have ever celebrated Leap Day, but there are plenty of laughs to go around in their annual heist episodes and other classics, even just in the four seasons currently available to stream on Netflix.

  • Seasons: 4 available on Netflix
  • Cast: Andy Samberg, Stephanie Beatriz, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Joe Lo Truglio, Chelsea Peretti, Andre Braugher, Dirk Blocker, Joel McKinnon Miller

Of all the titles featured on this list, Dune might be the most pressing Leap Day must-watch. Why? Well, there's two reasons. For starters, Dune: Part Two releases in theaters the very next day on March 1. Also, Leap Day (Feb. 29) is the last day Dune will be available to watch on Netflix. Ahead of the sequel's release, Dune re-entered Netflix's daily top 10 ranking, but the blockbuster movie's time is running out on the streamer. Don't miss your chance to watch the movie on Netflix before diving right into the highly anticipated follow-up in theaters this weekend.

It's the new Netflix original series everyone is talking about in February 2024, and it's likely that everyone will still be talking about it in March. The live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender finally premiered on Feb. 22 and instantly became a huge hit with fans of the animated series. Its premiere even outpaced One Piece's debut last year. The show's early success has definitely set the stage for a potential second season, so don't miss out on going on the adventure of a lifetime with latest hit action-fantasy series!

Even though Leap Day isn't a holiday that gives kids a day off from school, it's still nice give the littlest Netflix fans something special to watch on 2024's extra day. The animated family movie Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken landed on Netflix in February 2024 and has been a hit in the daily top 10 ever since its release. It's a stark contrast to its less than stellar performance at the box office. Ruby Gillman features the voice of To All the Boys I've Loved Before star Lana Condor, and it's an action-comedy that's definitely fun for the whole family, especially on Leap Day.

  • Release Year: 2023
  • Director: Kirk DeMicco
  • Cast: Lana Condor, Toni Collette, Annie Murphy, Colman Domingo, Jane Fonda

Fifty Shades of Grey star Jamie Dornan stars in the thriller series The Tourist, which was originally streaming on Max after airing on BBC One in the UK. However, Max dropped the series, which led to Netflix picking it up. The first season debuted on the first of February and became an overnight success, teeing up the release of season 2 on Leap Day. If you have become obsessed with The Tourist, there's no way you can pass up the opportunity to start watching the second season the minute it's released on Feb. 29. It's by far the biggest Netflix new release on Leap Day.
