2 Netflix new releases to watch and 1 to skip this weekend (Sept. 27)

Even though spooky season has likely commenced for a fair amount of fall and Halloween devotees, it's still the last weekend of September. On the list of Netflix new releases this week, there weren't too many spooky options to get into the spirit of the incoming autumnal festivities, but there are still plenty of options to add to your watch list this weekend.

While Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, Uglies, The Perfect Couple, Rebel Ridge, and Emily in Paris remain staples in the top 10 most popular rankings on Netflix going into the weekend, the week also brought so newbies to add to your watch list: documentary series Mr. McMahon, coming-of-age series Penelope, and documentaries Jailbreak: Love on the Run and Will & Harper.

Nobody Wants This

Watch! Looking for a romantic comedy series that's genuinely and objectively good? Well, here it is! Kristen Bell and Adam Brody team up in Netflix's new insanely lovable rom-com series Nobody Wants This. Bell and Brody play Joanne and Noah, something of a modern day Romeo and Juliet whose romantic connection receives a push and pull from their opposing lifestyles: He's a rabbi and she's "shiksa" with a sex and relationships podcast. Can they make love work?

Even if nobody wants them to work, watch one episode of Nobody Wants This and you will definitely be rooting for Joanne and Noah to end up together. The series, which was created by Erin Foster and based on her real-life experiences, is nothing short of an aboslute joy. From its writing to its performances to the palpable chemistry of its amazing leading stars, you will be hard pressed to find a show to watch this weekend that's as funny, heartfelt, and instantly delightful.

Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval

Skip! After the conclusion of her talk show in 2022, Ellen DeGeneres returns in what's being marketed as the final stand-up comedy special of her career. The Emmy winner suggests she's removing herself from the spotlight once and for all following the release of Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval on Netflix. We'll have to wait and see if the comedian, host, and actress actually intends to retire after this Netflix special, but it's a bittersweet sendoff nonetheless.

In For Your Approval, DeGeneres pokes fun at herself while also defending herself from the accusations that she's mean. While fans of her comedy will find the humor in her signature joke-telling and storytelling style and should definitely check out the special, those who aren't fans of DeGeneres should probably opt out of watching (or hate-watching) and turn on something that will actually bring you joy. So, watch if you're a fan, skip if you're not.

Rez Ball

Watch! Netflix has been coming out with a lot more sports-oriented content lately, whether its documentary series about popular sports figures or live sporting events from hot dog eating, golf, and (soon) football. But on Sept. 27, Netflix released the new sports drama film Rez Ball, which is sure to be one of the most-watch new releases of the weekend. The movie also just might be the cathartic tearjerker you have been looking for.

Rez Ball centers on a high school basketball team in New Mexico with a strong representation of Native American heritage. Tragically, the team loses one of their own, which forces the team to rally together in order to achieve their ultimate goal of winning a state championship game. It's based on a true story and will have fans of inspirational sports movies reaching for the tissue box. There are so many movies to watch on Netflix, but Rez Ball should without a doubt be on your watch list.
