Netflix's biggest movie is getting a sequel (but fans will be waiting years for it)

Shortly after the animated musical film was released on Netflix in June 2025, it gained widespread popularity, quickly becoming a global sensation. You couldn’t scroll through social media without seeing it trending, with fans from every corner of the world sharing fan art, edits, and reaction videos. By Aug.  26, it had already passed the previous record‑holder (Red Notice) and claimed the title of Netflix’s most‑watched film ever, with more than 236 million views reported at that time.

It was also given a limited theatrical release in that same month and saw impressive box office returns. Of course, with a level of success like that, fans immediately began clamoring for a sequel. News eventually broke that talks were being had between Sony Pictures and Netflix about a potential KPop Demon Hunters 2, but nothing had been confirmed. That's until now.

A KPop Demon Hunters sequel is officially happening at Netflix

It's true! Fans of the hit animated flick finally have something to celebrate. According to Deadline, Netflix and Sony are reportedly moving forward with a KPop Demon Hunters 2. The news outlet also shared that filmmakers Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans are returning. Kang and Appelhans helmed the first movie as well as helped co-write the screenplay. However, Deadline also reports that it's unknown if the sequel will eventually receive a theatrical release like the first film.

Now, let's talk about the bad news. Those who are hoping to see this sequel next year or even the year after will have to exercise a lot of patience. The film is not expected to be released until 2029, meaning fans will have to wait nearly four years before diving back into the dazzling world of K-pop demon slayers.

While the wait might feel agonizing, it’s important to remember that animated films of this scale take time, especially a project as ambitious as this one. I highly doubt you want a rushed sequel that doesn’t live up to the original, right?

KPop Demon Hunters follows Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, three K-pop stars who are also secretly demon hunters. Their biggest challenge comes when a powerful demon forms a rival K-pop boy band to steal the souls of fans. Arden Cho, May Hong, and Ji-young Yoo voiced the characters of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. It's unclear if they'll be returning for the sequel, but it's expected that they will.
