For the longest time, the running joke was that Netflix always canceled its original series, but lately, that hasn't been the case. While many of the streamer's biggest hits will be returning with new seasons, more than a few will end with their upcoming seasons. It's always bittersweet when we know our favorite shows will be coming to an end, but it's even more bittersweet when it's unexpected.
Recently, Netflix announced the renewals of a number of its most beloved original series, like Running Point, Big Mistakes, and My Life with the Walter Boys. However, we're still waiting to learn the fates of a handful of shows that haven't been renewed or canceled just yet. Well, we finally received an update on a promising original scripted game show that premiered last year, and it's not good.
Neil Patrick Harris' What's in the Box? reportedly canceled at Netflix
According to Matt Webb Mitovich in his latest edition of Matt's Inside Line, Netflix doesn't have plans to create any additional episodes of What's in the Box? Neil Patrick Harris hosted the game show that has seemingly been canceled by the streaming service under the radar. As of right now, the six episodes that currently exist will not be joined by new episodes or a season 2.

What's in the Box? premiered on Netflix on Dec. 17, 2025 with all six of the first (and now only) season dropping all at once. The series didn't have a weekly or batched release strategy like the vast majority of Netflix's other reality competition series, and the release date's proximity to both the holidays and the gargantuan shadow of Stranger Things season 5's end surely didn't help matters.
Perhaps also just didn't have much of a unique premise to hook in viewers. What's in the Box? found Neil Patrick Harris helping guide pairs of contestants as they compete in rounds of trivia questions and guess the contents of a mystery box. As the game progresses, the contestants are forced to use their intelligence to ace the quizzes and strategizes against their competitors for the grand prize.
Even with the show's unique twist on popular game shows, What's in the Box? has similar ingredients to other small-screen game shows that were far more popular. It's a little Deal or No Deal and a little Million Dollar Secret. Being so, the series has a lot of promise and could have become Netflix's latest signature unscripted show, but failing to connect with audiences clearly caused its cancellation.
Netflix has continued to push its way into more corners of the reality television landscape after creating smash hits like Love is Blind, Selling Sunset, Queer Eye, Too Hot to Handle, Is It Cake?, Perfect Match, and so many more. Straightforward game shows have been a difficult space for the streamer to break into, and even though What's in the Box? season 2 isn't happening, it was a solid attempt.
