What is the best Oscar-nominated film by Netflix? The streaming giant has produced a record of Oscar-worthy films that have created buzz in the film industry. Not too long ago, Roma (2018), directed by Alfonso Cuaron, won Oscar nominations, including Best Director.

Today, Emilia Perez is in the Oscar running for Best International Feature, Best Makeup & Hairstyling, Best Sound, and Best Original Song. The film stars Karla Sofia Gascon, Zoe Saldana, and Selena Gomez in its latest film, making a run for Academy Award nominations.

Netflix has produced a record of Oscar-nominated films, including Mank (2021), The Power of the Dog (2020), Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2020), and My Octopus Teacher (2020). In the time period for Netflix original films that have been produced, surrealism and star power have been the contribution.

Emilia Perez is a true Oscar threat

Emilia Perez is a French-produced film focused on life in Mexico that is focused on a musical that is the most prominent in modern film history. The film takes place mainly in Mexico City and parts of the world including Paris. It had been criticized for not taking place in the country of Mexico by critics as Mexico City has a large French population.

This will be Gomez’s firm participation in an Oscar-nominated film as her background in music allowed her to thrive. Zoe Saldana and Karla Sofia Gascon emerge as one of the talents that has elevated the film to another level.

This will be the second film nominated for an Oscar that has a setting based in Mexico. Netflix has been set up for success in its competition with other studios including Warner Bros., Universal, and Paramount. Roma marked an elevation for success for films that weren’t distributed at the box office.

The French-produced film may not be the first Netflix original nominated for an Oscar, but it is not going to be the last. The future for the streaming giant is bright but is poised to attract prominent talent to produce Oscar worth films.

Emilia Perez’s nominations and wins in the Golden Globes and other places have showcased how much Netflix has taken seriously about having films being Oscar-worthy. Gomez, Saldana, and Gascon give off performances that have attracted audiences not only in the U.S., Mexico, and France, but around the world.

Storylines, directors, producers, and talent make up the difference when it comes to producing Oscar-caliber films and Netflix has done a good job to fill in that niche. Every international film has a story to connect to its audience as well as relate to the world. The Academy has done a good job of understanding the caliber of foreign films, especially for those that don’t have household names in the U.S. market.
