We are inching closer and closer to the end of the year, which means it is time for many "best of" lists. Every year, Netflix releases hundreds of movies, which is both good and bad because some of the best ones can get lost in the shuffle. As someone who watches as much as he can yearly, I share my favorite Netflix original movies of 2024.
We had the return of an iconic comedy legend, Axel Foley, Glenn Powell wowed us with multiple disguises, and Pablo Larraín finished his biopic trilogy. I always credit Netflix for its wide range of diverse films.
You could be laughing one minute, crying the next, and doing a deep dive into a serial killer the next. This year proved to be very fruitful for Netflix and its original films.
Best Netflix Original movies of 2024
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F
There was no way I wouldn't add Eddie Murphy's return as Axel Foley to my list. For years, we have heard about the fourth installment of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, but it has never come to fruition. Finally, Murphy's relationship with Netflix finally made our dreams come true. The movie was filled with nostalgia while also delivering some new pieces to the story. This was everything I wanted and more.
Emilia Perez
Jacques Audiard's bold, daring, and one-of-a-kind Emilia Perez blew me away when I saw it. It features one of the year's best ensembles, with four groundbreaking performances from Karla Sofia Gascon, Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz. From the brilliant song choices to the incredible work of the VFX team to Audiard's bold storytelling, Emilia Perez is not only one of Netflix's best movies of 2024 but all time.
His Three Daughters
Speaking of ensembles, Natasha Lyonne, Elizabeth Olsen, and Carrie Coon deliver some beautiful work in Azazel Jacob's devastating movie His Three Daughters. It follows three daughters trying to prepare for the passing of their father. Jacob layered this script with such precision that it will make you laugh and ultimately reach for the Kleenex.
Will & Harper
Will Ferrell singlehandedly showcased how to navigate, understand, and include a trans woman. After 30 years, Ferrell's good friend Harper Steele came out as a trans woman, and Ferrell set out on a road trip to process this new stage of their friendship and reintroduce Harper to the country she loves as her true self. This is one of the most beautiful and relevant documentaries you will watch.
Woman of the Hour
Anna Kendrick's directorial debut was terrific. First, I didn't know the film was based on a true story until the credits rolled. This brilliantly constructed crime thriller kept you on the edge of your seat. Kendrick was amazing in front of and behind the camera, and if you haven't watched it, it has to be added to the top of your watch list.
Carry On
One of the most recent additions to the Netflix library has made it on the list. Carry On will be added to the yearly Christmas watch list as it was the perfect little streaming movie. I flipped on the film, and the well-balanced script with an excellent villain performance from Jason Bateman made it one of my favorite Netflix originals of the year.
