Taking 30 years to make a sequel for a relatively fluffy and light-hearted comedy might mean that by the time the new movie comes out, all the fun has been lost. Of course, having a Happy Gilmore 2 just a couple of years after the original might have seemed like a money grab. Instead, now we get a more reflective Happy, and that is a great thing.
Sure, there are likely to be childish antics, but if the trailer for the movie that was dropped by Netflix on Tuesday is any indication, the film is going to be self-aware enough to avoid the pitfalls many sequels fall into. Heck, even the trailer is worth multiple viewings, so surely Happy Gilmore 2 will be as well.
There are homages throughout, especially to the original film. But if you need some Shawshank Redemption tied into Happy, you have that. If you need Bad Bunny to overact to, well...something, you have that, too.

Mostly, however, we get a lot of Happy and a lot of smiles. Plus, the thing he does to that curtain while appearing to play some simulated golf is likely to be even funnier in the context of the film. The crowd is behind him, and he doesn't mind his mistake. It is a wonderful moment.
Let's be real, however. Happy Gilmore 2 is not going to be out to win Academy Awards. It is going to be meant to be pure fun this summer, and we keep our intentions on good memories and creating the same while the rest of the world is what it is.
We need Happy right now, especially as we now know he has been bronzed beside Tiger Woods and other golfing greats. What exactly is the context of that?
That is what makes the trailer so good. We do not feel as if we are only seeing the best bits of the movie, but simply snippets of scenes that will be more fulfilling while watching the movie. In other words, July 25, 2025, when Netflix releases the film, cannot come soon enough.
