Netflix has finally given us the kind of news for Blue Eye Samurai that we’ve been looking for, but unfortunately, it’s not all great.

The streaming platform announced Blue Eye Samurai, the popular adult animated series that’s inspired by Western animation (a lot of anime elements), will return for season 2 in January 2027. We don’t have a specific date just yet, but at least we have a timeframe now, so huzzah.

Netflix also shared the new teaser trailer, so take a look below:

There's more good news, too! According to Netflix's TUDUM, the series was renewed for a third season.

Unfortunately, it’s not all great news. Netflix announced season 2 will be the final season of Blue Eye Samurai. The network promised it will be an “epic conclusion.”

The good part about that is that it seems the animators have planned for this, as the third season is set to release in 2028. Thankfully, we won’t have to wait that long for the ending.

That said, it is a shame this won’t continue much longer. I think it’s just the anime lover in me who wishes this could go on for years and years. But even so, I’m glad we at least got something. It feels like it’s been ages since we’ve heard about this series, and it almost felt as if Netflix had forgotten about it.

What's next for Mizu in Blue Eye Samurai season 2

Even though we've been waiting forever for the new season, there’s not much that’s known about season 2 of Blue Eye Samurai, but we at least know one important thing — Mizu (voiced by Maya Erskine) is not going to be in Japan anymore.

Mizu’s main goal was to hunt down the men who assaulted her mother, leading to her birth and her becoming an “abomination” in the old world (hence her blue eyes). This would later lead to a lifetime of discrimination for her. While some were in Japan, others will be across the world.

The last time we saw Mizu in this beautifully animated series, she was heading on a ship to London to hunt down the remaining two men from her list, Skeffington and Routely. She was going to kill Fowler (Kenneth Branagh), one of the four men associated with the crime, but since he had valuable information, he's currently her hostage.

In season 2, the synopis states that Mizu’s “bloody quest” for vengeance will lead her directly to London, where she'll face new enemies, her own past, and friends who will guide her along the way. There is one thing that I’m sure this trailer is not talking about — and that’s the language barrier.

It’s clear Mizu is going to use Fowler in some way to get information about where the last two men are, but I’m curious about how they’re going to communicate that aspect to Mizu traveling to a whole other country.

That doesn’t mean she is going to keep Fowler alive. In a featured interview with TUDUM, co-creator Michael Green said that Mizu fully intends “to kill him,” but she just needs him right now.

Once he’s served his purpose — and aids in her finding her true biological father — he'll be as dead as Violet, another one of the four men.

Also, because Mizu is traveling across the world, she might struggle with her own nature and how she interacts with this different culture. Co-creator Amber Noizumi actually spoke about this specifically.

“It would be an interesting part of Mizu’s personal journey to see how Europeans react to her,” said Noizumi. “What would she think of Western culture when she’s suddenly immersed in it? Are they all the monsters she thinks they are?”

What about the others?

Meanwhile, while Mizu is over in England, the other two people we followed pretty consistently through season 1, Akemi (Brenda Song) and Taigen (Darren Barnet), are trying to navigate a new world order at Edo Castle under a ruthless and brutal shogun. They will be our main source of Japanese information during this time, and I’m curious to see how it will connect.

At the same time, Mizu’s companion, Ringo (Masa Oka), is on his own. He believes that Mizu actually died in a fire, so he’s searching for some new purpose (not knowing that she’s actually still alive and across the continent). All of this is so messy — and I love it.

I’m not sure what season 2 holds for these core four characters. Judging from this, it sounds like it’s going to be an intense one. And I, for one, can’t wait to see it.

You can watch all of Blue Eye Samurai on Netflix. Stay tuned for more news about season 2!
