While the rush of reboots and revivals of past television favorites has significantly decreased in recent years, there are still plenty of nostalgic comebacks to look forward to. Not only does Netflix have a reboot of Little House on the Prairie coming this summer, but the streamer also has another throwback series making its return later this year.

Countless sitcoms from the '80s and '90s (and even '00s) have made their way back to our screens recently either in the former of reboots or revivals, and Netflix is giving us another one to get excited for. After being announced to be in the works back in 2024, Netflix has now set an official release date for the upcoming A Different World reboot and sequel series.

A Different World reboot releases in September 2026 on Netflix

Netflix shared the exciting news with fans that A Different World drops its first season on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2026. The complete 10-episode season of the single-camera comedy will release all at once, dodging a split-release strategy that so many Netflix comedies have been given in the past. In addition to the release date, the streamer also dropped a short teaser. Check it out below!

As you can see, the first teaser doesn't include any footage from the highly anticipated series. It's only introducing Deborah Wayne (Maleah Joi Moon), who is the youngest daughter of the original series' characters Whitley Gilbert-Wayne (Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne Cleofis Wayne (Kadeem Hardison). She's part of the new generation of Hillman College students coming of age.

Here's the sequel series' official synopsis as shared in Netflix's press release: "A Different World returns to Hillman College with a new class stepping onto campus — and beloved faces coming home. At the center is Deborah Wayne (Maleah Joi Moon), Whitley and Dwayne’s lovingly sheltered youngest daughter, a free spirit with a flair for the spotlight and a big heart who’s still figuring out her own path at Hillman."

Along with Deborah taking the lead in the new Hillman generation, the main cast also features Alijah Kai as Rashida Duvall, Cornell Young IV as Shaquille Johnson, Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir Rodale, Kennedi Reece as Hazel Henry, and Chibuikem Uche as Kojo Achebe. Of course, A Different World also welcomes back our favorite characters from the original classic.

Beyond Guy and Hardison, Cree Summer and Darryl M. Bell have also been confirmed to reprise their characters Freddie Brooks and Ron Johnson respectively. We could also be in for some surprise cameos from other long-time cast members and other secret reveals about the new characters' connections to the iconic original characters.

The new A Different World comes from showrunner, writer, and executive producer Felicia Pride, who's also joined by fellow executive producers Debbie Allen, Tom Werner, Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Mandy Summers. A number of the new team members behind the scenes were also creative forces behind the original, so we're in good hands.

A Different World ran for six seasons on NBC, beginning with its premiere in September 1987. The series finale aired in July 1993. All told, the series, which was initially a spinoff of The Cosby Show, aired a total of 144 episodes. If you would like to catch up on the original sitcom, all six seasons are now available to stream on Netflix ahead of the sequel reboot's premiere in September.
