It's a rare move for Netflix to make, but the streaming service actually renewed a brand-new original series before it even managed to make its debut. You don't see that happen very often, if at all, but with a show as highly anticipated as the forthcoming Little House on the Prairie reboot, the streamer's clearly bracing to have a huge hit on its hands.
On March 3, Netflix made the exciting announcement that Little House on the Prairie season 2 has been renewed months before the reboot even premieres. Obviously, Netflix doesn't have any sort of viewership data to point to in support of the show's renewal, but Jinny Howe, Netflix’s head of US and Canada scripted series, said in a statement, "We’re confident that Little House will deliver even more of what fans truly love." Howe also teased that the first season "established a rich foundation of storytelling for years to come." Sounds like they have plans to continue beyond season 2!
In addition to sharing the new of Little House on the Prairie getting renewed for season 2, Netflix also delivered the second-best good news: The season 1 release date. The reboot begins streaming on Thursday, July 9, 2026 on Netflix with its eight-episode first season. All eight episodes will be released at once, with season 2 hopefully to follow within the next year.
The Ingalls family are on their way. Little House on the Prairie premieres July 9 and the series has been officially renewed for Season 2!

While we will have to continue waiting patiently for a teaser trailer to give us a first-look at the new iteration of the Ingalls family, Netflix dropped the first photo from the series. It's exactly what you might expect from a show called Little House on the Prairie, though we're seeing much more of the prairie than we are of the house right now.
In the photo, Luke Bracey appears as Charles Ingalls, leading his family's horse-drawn carriage as they walk behind him. The photo also features Alice Halsey as Laura Ingalls, Skywalker Hughes as Mary Ingalls, and Crosby Fitzgerald as Caroline Ingalls. Since the image is taken from pretty far away, we don't get to see them close-up, but we get the perfect sense of the show's lush landscape and it's of-the-time set pieces like the carriage and the family's costuming.
Based on Laura Ingalls Wilder's book of the same name, Netflix's Little House on the Prairie reboot comes from showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine and drops us right back into the American West as the Ingalls family faces the highs and lows of the times. Netflix describes the series as a "hopeful" series about family and survival that "offers a kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier."
Getting renewed for season 2 so early will definitely help prospective viewers become immediately invested in the series upon its July 9 premiere on Netflix. We don't have to worry about a surprise cancellation. We know going in that another feel-good season is on the way!
