True crime, action, horror: sounds like just another night shift at the Waffle House. But you can get it all in the comfort of your home on Netflix this week Smothered and covered is at your discretion.
You'll find new seasons of several popular series this week, and plenty of new fare, too. From a fixture on the scene of American comedy for decades to one of the latest and greatest horror-comedy mashups, Netflix has your flix fix this week. Sorry, you'll have to wait for that Little House on the Prairie reboot.
The new arrivals might not entirely make up for the loss of some titles getting the axe this week. I'd be quite sad about the departure of both seasons of Justice League: Unlimited if it weren't for the fact I wisely purchased it years ago. For the life of me, I still can't figure out why DC/ Warner et al didn't just hand the keys to the live action universe over to Bruce Timm. Ah well, on to this week's new arrivals.
Netflix helps celebrate comedy (and a lot of drama) this week
That fixture on the scene of American comedy I mentioned at the outset is the genetic freak himself. No, I don't mean Big Poppa Pump; it's Conan O'Brien, 76 inches of 100 percent pure Irish genetics, as he proudly proclaimed in the most self-deprecating manner possible. I can't wait to see how he plays down the honor of receiving the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
The drama arrives on the very next night with a compelling documentary of a savage wartime period that's fading away with time. Britain and The Blitz features newly restored archival footage and interviews of survivors of the air raids Nazi Germany launched on England for nearly nine months early in World War II. It's devastating to watch; just imagine trying to live through it.
The popular sports documentary series Untold returns Tuesday with its latest installment, Untold: Shooting Guards. Now in its fifth season, the series has done a brilliant job of unearthing the truth behind some of sports' most intriguing stories, from Johnny Manziel to the BALCO scandal. In this episode, teammates Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittendon intended to shoot more than basketballs.
Wednesday brings us the final film of an explosive French action trilogy. Last Bullet wraps up the story of getaway drive Lino, who first appeared in 2020's Lost Bullet. Don't worry, fam, if you need a refresher, both it and its sequel, Lost Bullet 2, are still on your favorite streamer. Will Lino finally get the vengeance he's sought for so long? And will he smash fifty more cars before he gets it? Maybe.
Four more shows arrive on Thursday. The third season of Blood of Zeus has a lot of fans excited. I'm looking forward to the debut of horror-comedy Heart Eyes. It's a clever take on the horror trope of the slasher stalking a young couple. The difference here? They're not a couple, and the killer just doesn't care, no matter how much they protest. As Captain America would say of the trailer: language.
Netlfix adds four more shows on Friday, including the true crime documentary, A Deadly American Marriage. For those looking for lighter fare, Nonnas promises to fill the bill. Vince Vaughn stars as a grieving son who decides to honor his mother's memory by opening an Italian restaurant.
No, really, it's a comedy. He brings four Italian grandmothers together as his chefs. And now you see where the comedy ensues. Vaughn may have the lead, but check out this cast: Lorraine Bracco, Talia Shire, Brenda Vaccaro, Susan Sarandon, and Linda Cardellini. That kitchen is cookin! I imagine the food is slightly better than Waffle House, too.
