Whether or not you have strong Italian roots, Netflix's Nonnas is for you. Most people can identify with comfort food when it's needed. With Nonnas, which was released on your favorite streamer on May 9, the comfort comes from taste and preparation.
The story was written by Liz Maccie and directed by her husband, Stephen Chbosky. The movie is a drama, but ultimately a heartwarming one. It's about family and friends and finding those people all over again.
As far as the cast, you will recognize most of the actors. In fact, you probably have seen much of their work. These are the people you need to know.
Cast of Nonnas is as delicious as the food
Lorraine Bracco as Roberta
Bracco actually lives in Sicily part of the year, so she was perfectly cast for the role of Roberta, an outspoken nonna who has issues dealing with her Bolognese counterparts. She especially likes to battle with Antonella.
The actress has played roles in many important projects, such as Goodfellas, The Sopranos, and Hackers. She has also appeared in Blue Bloods, Bojack Horseman, and other parts.
Susan Sarandon as Gia
Gia owns her own business as a hair stylist, but she still joins the nonnas as the restaurant's pastry chef. She was a long-time friend of Joe's mom. She helps the other ladies learn how to age gracefully.
Sarandon won an Oscar for Dead Man Walking in 1995, and has been nominated four other times. None of these were for one of her better-known works, the excellent Bull Durham.
Talia Shire as Teresa
Teresa is a former nun, but not a completely innocent past. She found carnal love at one point, and she has had issues coming to turns with what could have been and what was. She is the quiet strength of the show.
You have seen Shire in the Rocky franchise and The Godfather films. She has been a staple of the movie industry for decades. She is the real-life mother of actor Jason Schwartzman.
Brenda Vaccaro as Antonella
Vaccaro had huge success earlier in her career with her turns in Midnight Cowboy and Once Is Not Enough. She received an Oscar nomination for the latter. Over the last few decades, she has done much voice work.
Antonella is the first nonna to come aboard as a chef at the restaurant. She has very strong views of how Italian food should be made, but she learns to adjust as the movie gets closer to the end.
Vince Vaughn as Joe Scaravella
Vaughn is the show's lead. His character lives on Staten Island and has lost his mother and grandmother. He plans to open a restaurant called Enoteca Maria, even though he has no experience with it.
Vaughn has been in a million different things (maybe not that many, but it feels like it), but you might best remember him from Wedding Crashers, Old School, and more serious fare such as the Psycho remake.
Linda Cardellini as Olivia
Cardellini plays Olivia, Joe's long-ago prom date. She helps the restaurant stay above water by keeping it out of legal trouble.
The actress might be best known for playing Velma in the early 2000s versions of Scooby-Doo. She had a star turn as a guest character in Mad Men from 2013 through 2015. Her characters always appear on the cusp of doing good, but with a touch of danger.
Drea de Matteo as Stella
De Matteo's Stella is Bruno's wife, and she helps design the restaurant. She seemingly knows everything about the neighborhood.
Besides starting a profile on adult-oriented OnlyFans in 2023 (seriously), you have probably seen the actress in many projects. She played Adriana La Cerva in The Sopranos and Wendy Case in Sons of Anarchy. She has done some of everything, so you will recognize her face.
Joe Manganiello as Bruno
Bruno has been Joe's best friend since childhood. He is extremely helpful in helping build the restaurant, even though he doubts his friend's ability to run it well.
Manganiello has had many roles in his career, including hosting Deal or No Deal Island. He has also appeared on How I Met Your Mother, One Tree Hill, and True Blood, among many others. He is seemingly ever likable.
