Ahead of the Dec. 26 premiere of Squid Game season 2, there are already rumblings about what the future could hold for the Netflix franchise.

Now, we have known that Netflix renewed the series for a third and final season for quite some time, but there's currently rumors that an Academy Award-nominated director could be developing a new English-language series that would grow the universe.

According to Deadline, Netflix has begun to develop an English-language Squid Game series, likely paving the way to continue the franchise beyond season 3 and the second season of the reality competition series, and they're bringing in David Fincher to do so.

David Fincher might be working on new Squid Game series

The pairing would make sense considering Fincher re-upped his deal with Netflix earlier this year. Because the supposed series remains in early development, additional details are scarce beyond that fact that it's scripted, English-language, and likely set in the United States.

Obviously, it's unknown how involved Fincher would be in the production of the series. Fincher previously executive produced Netflix's House of Cards and directed only two of its 73 episodes. He also executive produced Netflix's Mindhunter, directing seven of its 19 episodes.

There's no doubt that Fincher's an excellent director for a potential Squid Game series. Some of his films have been known for their violent and mysterious elements, such as Se7en, Fight Club, Zodiac, and Gone Girl. There's a reason he has been nominated for the Best Director Oscar three times.

Some Squid Game fans, both passionate and casual, will have certain hesitations and questions. "Do we need an English-language Squid Game series?" It's a similar question whenever a reboot, revival, or sequel comes up, and the answer's similar, too: Probably not. But why not?

At the end of the day, Netflix is going to be Netflix and bank on their most acclaimed, profitable, and viewed properties and talents. Fincher landed Netflix an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture (among many other nominations) for Mank in 2021. They're going to bank on him.

According to Deadline, all signs are pointing to Fincher working with Netflix on the next iteration of the Squid Game universe throughout 2025, developing the series for launch not too long after the 2025 release of Squid Game season 3. Now all that's left is for Netflix to give it the green light.
