We have some Goode news about Dept. Q season 2!

Matthew Goode and the rest of the cast and crew of Dept. Q season 2 recently wrapped filming in Scotland at the end of October 2026, according to a report from What's on Netflix. That's welcome news for fans of the Netflix mystery that revolves around Detective Chief Inspector Carl Morck, played by Goode.

The original series based on the book series by Jussi Adler-Olsen premiered on Netflix in the late spring of 2025, and it was a smash-hit out of the gate. Fans loved the dark mystery and Morck's investigation into a cold case involving the disappearance of Merritt Lingard, played by Chloe Pirrie.

I'm not sharing any spoilers about how that case was eventually solved, but there are still many questions that remain about who shot Morck before the events of the first season. Then, at the end of season 1, we learned that Morck's team, the ragtag investigators of Dept. Q, would be moving forward and trying to solve more disappearances and cold cases from around Scotland. That's what will be happening when Dept. Q returns for season 2.

Netflix already confirmed Goode will be back in season 2 of the hit UK series, along with season 1 stars Leah Byrne as Rose, Alexej Manvelov as Akram, and Jamie Sives as Hardy. Katie Dickie will also be back as Chief Superintendent Moira Jacobson, along with Mark Bonnar, Aaron McVeigh, and Sanjeev Kohli.

According to Netflix, there are a bunch of new members joining the Dept. Q season 2 cast, including Greg Wise, Nicholas Rowe, Tony Curran, Aisling Franciosi, Amy Brenneman, Hamish Clark, Isla Johnston, Alex Ferns, Ross Anderson, and Rebecca Root.

Look, we know Dept. Q got a bit of a budget bump after solving the key mystery in the first season, but it looks like, with all those cast members, Netflix gave creators Scott Frank and Chandni Lakhani a little more budget to play with in season 2, as well.

Dept. Q season 2 is coming to Netflix in 2027

Production on the second season started about a year after the show became a Netflix hit. The series wrap at the end of October caps off about five months of production. Now, the show moves to post-production and later promotion as it gets ready for its Netflix release.

Unfortunately, Netflix has not shared exactly when the new season will premiere. Earlier this year, we learned Dept. Q season 2 was not expected to be a 2026 release. Starting production halfway through the year was basically the tell-tale sign that this show would not be returning by the end of the year. It makes sense, too, looking at some of the bigger British Netflix shows that have arrived this year, including Black Doves season 2, which premieres on Thursday, Nov. 5.

The good news is that we won't have to wait long, most likely, for Dept. Q season 2 to arrive on Netflix in 2027. With production wrapping in November, the earliest we'd see the new season premiere would be sometime in March or April 2027. It's probably more likely we're looking at a May, June, or July premiere date for Dept. Q season 2, but it will just depend on what Netflix's 2027 lineup looks like and how the streamer wants to put its schedule together for the new year.

We'll share more updates about Dept. Q season 2 on Netflix as we find out! We should have more information about the new season around the end of the year or very early 2026. Stay tuned.
