Herbert West is a medical student experimenting with bringing dead animals and humans back to life. Herbert creates a “re-animation reagent” and uses it on a cat successfully. The med student then decides to prove his work is justified by re-animating a dead human corpse.

The mad scientist angle is horrifying as we watch West play God in experiments gone wrong. Every time a corpse is brought back to life, the corpse goes into a zombie like state filled with rage and intent on destruction. Re-Animator shows off that vintage 1980’s gore taking the film from science fiction to horror without a moment’s notice.

Jeffrey Combs plays the lead actor Herbert West and delivered a performance that landed him two more appearances in sequels of the series. Re-Animator is a cult classic that wowed critics and audiences then and now. This film is just another example that a big budget isn’t as important as great acting combined with a compelling story.
