The Endless Summer

Release Year: 1966

Directed by Bruce Brown

In The Endless Summer, Bruce Brown, the filmmaker, and surfers/friends, Robert August, Nat Young, Rodney Sumpter, and Mike Hynson, travels to Tahiti, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa trying to find great waves to surf. The idea for the documentary was to follow “summer” throughout the world and stay in surf season for the whole year.

The Endless Summer is largely credited for creating the spark that sent surfers abroad in search of bigger waves, better beaches, and, of course, summer. The film also increased the popularity of surf rock. The Sandals, a surf rock band, provided the entire soundtrack to the documentary, which brought surfing and the surf rock to inland communities and theaters all over the world.
