Warning: This post contains spoilers from Below on Netflix from this point forward.
Netflix dropped its new mystery thriller limited series Below, which stars Josh Hartnett as a fisherman in Newfoundland grappling with the lasting effects of his father's death. As the first episode of the series reveals, when Calvin Penney (Hartnett) was a child, he was forced to make a decision that resulted in his father be taken under the sea by a mysterious entity.
After 40 years and starting his own family, Calvin still struggles with losing his father and what he saw in the water. More and more unexplained incidents are happening in the waters of Snook's Arm, which has also been facing the unfortunate setbacks of fish disappearing. Suddenly, Calvin and the residents understand they're dealing with an aggressive, giant squid.
However, it's not quite that cut and dry. The terror being unleashed on the community by the squid comes along with the residents being pushed away from their home with a resettlement deal on the table. The two conflicts eventually converge in a perfect storm leading Calvin to save the day. But does the ending provide closure and suggest that Calvin has another problem brewing?

Does Calvin save his town from the squid in Below?
The road to understanding what's happening in Snook's Arm is a long and winding one for Calvin and his scientist friend Fonda Howander (Mackenzie Davis). Eventually, they come to learn that the giant squid causing their waters grief is much older, larger, and dangerous than they had originally believed. She's eventually dubbed "Mudder" by old friends of Calvin that he catches up with.
In the end, Calvin does protect the giant squid and his down. Fonda makes the revelation that the large iceberg in the harbor is actually the giant squid's nest, but her eggs can't hatch in the warm, shallow water. Calvin jumps to action to prevent the airstrike planned by Jim Crocker (Frank Moore) and the military by hauling the iceberg further into the sea to give the squid more room.
Calvin's move also saves Snook's Arm from the resettlement vote, which was being manipulated by Crocker and his daughter Jan (Natasha Henstridge). They were attempting to removed the residents from the island in order to take advantage of the cobalt and copper that was underground in the minds and very valuable. If the residents took the deal, they wouldn't know what their land was worth.

The last episode of Below sets up a potential season 2
Even though Calvin saved the squid and her eggs, she eventually and naturally died on the ocean floor. Fonda had the opportunity to study the eggs, which weren't able to hatch because the water was too warm. But she's still excited at the prospect of researching the squid. Not to mention, Calvin and Fonda finally appeared to realize that they have feelings for each other.
Calvin opended the Big Squid Distillery and Brewing company, and it's a big success for his family and the town. He's also now allowed Wade (Charlie Heaton) the opportunity to join him on his boat and lead the way. But the father and son duo happened upon something they never imagined to see out on the waters again: Another giant iceberg. How is that possible if the giant squid died?
That's the question that ends Below and will leave certain viewers wanting more. One reading of the ending could simply be that it's full circle and that the cycle continues. But another reading obviously hints that a second season exploring the truth about this iceberg could be in the cards. It's worth noting that Netflix has marketed Below as a limited series, but as we know, those can be renewed.
Overall, Below accomplishes what it set out to accomplish with its story and completes the arc about Calvin fight to save his home and getting closure about his father's death. But the door's clearly open to explore more between Calvin and Fonda's relationship, the truth about Maggie, what happened to the Crockers, Jay (Rohan Campbell) and Mary's (Ruby Stokes) next steps, and whether Mudder is really back somehow.
