The Beast in Me unexpectedly renewed for season 2 at Netflix after Emmy win

You can never say that Netflix doesn't keep us on our toes and catch us off guard from time to time. Unfortunately, sometimes that element of surprise manifests itself as back-to-back cancellations of fan-favorite shows, but if we're really lucky, the streaming service announces the renewal of a show that we weren't even aware was in contention for renewal. And that's exactly what just happened.

Last year, Netflix released the limited series The Beast in Me starring Claire Danes and Matthew Rhys. Given the show's talent in front of the camera, the series became an immediate success that everybody was talking about. After earning eight Emmy Award nominations and taking the win for Rhys' performance, Netflix has changed course and decided to green light a second season.

Netflix revealed the exciting and surprising The Beast in Me season 2 news on Sept. 24, just shy of one year since the show's debut in November 2025. So far, Danes has been confirmed to reprise her leading role as Aggie Wiggs and executive producers Howard Gordon and Daniel Pearle will also be back as co-showrunners for the second season. But there's an obviously big change coming.

If you were hoping that Matthew Rhys would somehow be reprising his Emmy-winning role as Nile Jarvis, that's a highly unlikely scenario for multiple reasons. For starters, Nile was killed in the first season finale after he was convicted to three life sentences. What's more, Rhys is currently keeping busy with his other Emmy-winning role in Apple TV's Widow's Bay season 2.

But additional casting details haven't yet been confirmed by Netflix beyond Danes returning. Fellow season 1 series regulars Brittany Snow, who played Nile's wife Nina, and Natalie Morales, who played Aggie's ex-wife Shelley, aren't set for returns. However, there's definitely a way that each of those characters could be back as there's plenty of story left to tell.

Right now, we don't know what that story will be. Netflix hasn't divulged what The Beast in Me season 2 will be about in regard to Aggie's next moves in her life and career after publishing her titular book about Nile. There's a chance that Aggie will be working on a new book centered on another ominous figure, if that's become her writing niche in the aftermath of the Nile case unraveling.

Upon the show's renewal, co-showrunner Gordon shared a statement and offered some insight into the decision to bring the show back with another season. Clearly, he and the creative team behind the show dreamed up a story worthy of going back on the original intention to make a limited series. Again, he offers no teases about that story, but his excitement is palpable:

"We always told ourselves we'd only do a second season of The Beast in Me if we found a story that was worthy of the first — and I'm thrilled to say we found it. We loved making this show and our audience seemed to love watching it, so we're enormously grateful to Jinny Howe and Netflix, and to Karey Burke and 20th Television for giving us the chance to get the band back together and do it again."

There are plenty of questions left to answer about The Beast in Me season 2, but with Danes back in the lead, we know that this isn't an anthology series. Aggie's story will be continued with a new driving force and likely a fair amount of new characters. Now that it's officially no longer a miniseries, Danes will be competing in the stacked Drama Series categories at future award ceremonies.

Netflix didn't provide a timeline on when the second season would either begin production or be released. It's possible that production could begin before the end of the year, but if cameras don't start rolling until early 2027, we might be waiting until 2028 for the show to return. Let's hope that's not the case and we'll be binge-watching season 2 before the end of next year.
