Angelina Jolie stars in Maria on Netflix in December 2024 (watch the trailer!)

This winter, Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie will be vying for her third Oscar nomination. The movie star previously won Best Supporting Actress for Girl, Interrupted in 2000 and was nominated for Best Actress for The Changeling in 2009. Now, she's going for another Best Actress nod for her surely spectacular performance in the upcoming Netflix movie Maria.

From director Pablo Larraín and writer Stephen Knight, Maria made its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival in August 2024, when the film was acquired by Netflix for distribution in the United States. So far, the film has been well-received by critics, currently holding a 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes before its streaming release in December.

Netflix will release Maria in the United States on Wednesday, Dec. 11 following a limited theatrical release over the Thanksgiving holiday on Wednesday, Nov. 27. Additional territories will receive the movie in 2025 when it's released theatrically in Italy, the United Kingdom, and Ireland on Jan. 1 and Jan. 10 respectively and in Germany on Feb. 6.

Angelina Jolie shines in Maria official trailer

On Oct. 24, Netflix released the official trailer for Maria and showcased Jolie in action as opera singer Maria Callas in the biopic. The trailer previews the emotional story that unfolds as the celebrated singer finds herself fleeing to Paris as the height of her fame dwindles and she comes to terms with her life, talent, and everything in between. MARIA reimagines the legendary soprano in her final days as the diva reckons with her identity and life."

Larraín perhaps is best known as the director of the biopics Jackie (2016) starring Natalie Portman and Spencer (2021) starring Kristen Stewart. He directed both actresses to Academy Award nominations for their performances. The directed also previously worked with Netflix on the 2023 black comedy horror film El Conde.

Maria joins a packed slate of star-studded movies coming out on Netflix toward the end of the year and hoping to score some awards buzz. Emilia Pérez starring Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofia Gascón, and Selena Gomez releases on Nov. 13, Malcolm Washington's The Piano Lesson arrives on Nov. 22, and Tyler Perry's The Six Triple Eight starring Kerry Washington premieres on Dec. 20.
