Back in May 2024, Netflix scored the streaming rights to the buzzy Spanish-language drama musical Emilia Pérez on the heels of the film's hot Cannes Film Festival premiere. The film from writer-director Jacques Audiard competed for the Palme d'Or and went on to win the Jury Prize and Best Actress award, shared by stars Adriana Paz, Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Selena Gomez.
Emilia Pérez hits theaters in France on Aug. 21, but viewers in the United States, Canada, and United Kingdom won't have long to wait for their chance to watch the awards season hopeful. On July 10, Netflix announced that the movie will have a limited theatrical run in select theaters this fall and make its streaming debut on Wednesday, Nov. 13 (in the US, UK, and Canada).
Along with the announcement of the streaming release date for three territories, the Emilia Pérez official social media account also shared four first-look photos from the movie. The stills from the movie offer first looks at the Cannes-winning foursome Gascón, Saldaña, Gomez, and Paz in the colorful musical. Take a look in the post featured below!
Emilia Pérez synopsis and trailer
The movie stars Zoe Saldaña as Rita Moro Castro, Karla Sofía Gascón as Emilia Pérez/Manitas Del Monte, Selena Gomez as Jessi Del Monta, Adriana Paz as Epifania, and Édgar Ramírez as Gustavo. Honestly, we didn't even need the Cannes award win to know that this is a great cast! But the win solidifies their talent in bringing this remarkable story to life.
In Emilia Pérez, Rita (Saldaña) happens upon an exit strategy she didn't see coming for her unfulfilling job as a lawyer. While her firm typically helps criminals get away with their crimes, Rita finds herself teaming up with cartel leader Manitas Del Monte to assist with cutting ties with business entanglements and transitioning into Emilia Pérez (Karla Sofía Gascón).
Here's the official synopsis via Netflix:
"Overqualified and undervalued, Rita is a lawyer at a large firm that is more interested in getting criminals off the hook than bringing them to justice. One day, she is given an unexpected way out, when cartel leader Manitas hires her to help him withdraw from his business and realize a plan he has been secretly preparing for years: to become the woman he has always dreamt of being."
Global pop superstar and Golden Globe-nominated Only Murders in the Building star Selena Gomez will obviously be among the biggest draws to the movie for some viewers, at least when it comes to the cast, and she's been receiving some of the best reviews of her career. More are likely to come when the movie officially begins streaming on Nov. 13. She could potentially earn her first Emmy Award nomination for acting this year, and let's manifest some Oscars love for her, too.
While Netflix hasn't released its own trailer for the upcoming movie, though the streamer will surely share teasers and trailers closer to the release date, the film's French distributor Pathé dropped a stunning trailer that gives viewers a taste of the dazzling performances that are already garnered advanced Oscar buzz. Check out the movie everyone will be talking about this fall in the video below!
