Make way for Angelina Jolie on Netflix! The Academy Award-winning actress brings her most recent buzzy movie to the streaming service after a hiatus from the screen since 2021's Marvel Cinematic Universe title Eternals, and it's surely going to be an event.
On Wednesday, Aug. 28, Netflix picked up the rights to Jolie's upcoming film Maria, ahead of its Aug. 29 premiere at the Venice Film Festival. The film comes from director Pablo Larraín, who has directed such Academy Award-nominated films as Jackie, Spencer, and El Conde.
Maria was written by Stephen Knight, who's known as the creator of Peaky Blinders and the writer of many movies, including the aforementioned Spencer. Knight also created and wrote Netflix's Emmy-nominated limited series All the Light We Cannot See.
In the movie, Jolie plays the world renown opera singer Maria Callas, who passed away at the age of 53 in 1977 while in Paris. Maria looks to explore the complexities of the singer amid her tragic final days and throughout her life. The drama film will be a "psychological portrait" of Callas and premiere on Netflix "soon," likely sometime later this year before awards season.
When the news arrived that Netflix had acquired the distribution rights to Maria, director Pablo Larraín shared a statement. Here's what the Oscar nominee said about partnering with Netflix on Maria via The Hollywood Reporter:
"I’m excited to partner again with the Netflix team who care so passionately about movies. This film is my most personal work yet. It is a creative imagining and psychological portrait of Maria Callas who, after dedicating her life to performing for audiences around the world, decides finally to find her own voice, her own identity, and sing for herself. I’m deeply honored to tell this story and share it with audiences worldwide like Maria did with her life."Pablo Larraín, director
According to Deadline, before hitting Netflix, Maria will next have a screening at the New York Film Festival on Sunday, Sept. 29 and Monday, Sept. 30 after making its premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Aug. 29. The film, which has a 123-minute run time, also stars Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Haluk Bilginer, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Stephen Ashfield, and Valeria Golino.
In additiona to this movie, Netflix has had a busy but exciting set of updates for its upcoming movie slate, having revealed its official fall lineup and setting release dates for a number of highly anticipated movies. This fall, Netflix will release a handful of horror and holiday movies on top of buzzed-about titles like The Piano Lesson, The Six Triple Eight, His Three Daughters, and Woman of the House.
Angelia Jolie's most recent starring role, which has all the makings of an another Academy Award campaign for the A-lister, adds an extra layer of star power to the streaming service's already stacked slate. Hopefully, Netflix won't take long to debut an official trailer and reveal the release date so fans know when they can check out Jolie's surely amazing new movie.
