Netflix’s One Day release date and everything we know

We’re nearing the end of 2023, and Netflix has begun announcing what’s to come out next year. One of the streamer’s new series coming in 2024 is One Day. We shared everything we know so far about this upcoming Netflix show below.

We first learned of One Day back in November 2021 when it announced that Netflix had ordered the show from Drama Republic, an independent production company based in the U.K. Molly Manners, Kate Hewitt, John Hardwick, and Luke Snellin signed on to direct while multi-award-winning screenwriter Nicole Taylor, Anna Jordan, Vinay Patel and Bijan Sheibani wrote the scripts.

Additionally, it’s a romantic drama series based on the bestselling novel of the same name by British novelist David Nicholls. Nicholls, along with Taylor, Roanna Benn, and Jude Liknaitzky are executive producers of the series as well.

What is One Day about on Netflix?

The 14-episode British limited series tells a decades-spanning love story starting in 1988. On July 15, 1988, two young college students, Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew, speak for the first time on the night of their graduation from the University of Edinburgh. The following morning, they go their separate ways but continue to meet up on the same day every year to catch up and share their progress in life and love.

Here’s the official synopsis via Netflix Media Center:

"One Day tells the story of Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew who, on 15th July 1988, the night of their graduation, speak for the very first time. The next morning, they go their separate ways but where will they be on this one ordinary day the next year, and the year after that, and every year that follows?Each episode finds Dex and Em, one year older, on this one particular date, as they grow and change, move together and apart, experience joy and heartbreak."

Cast

British actors Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall star in the leading roles as Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew.

Ambika is known for previously starring as Shruti Acharya in the British medical comedy-drama series This Is Going to Hurt. She also appeared in two episodes of the dark comedy series I Hate Suzie Too as Una Finch.

Leo is best known for starring as Jack in the second season of the Emmy Award-winning HBO series The White Lotus. He also appeared in two episodes of the short-lived fantasy horror series Vampire Academy as Adrian Ivashkov. You might even recognize him from his role as Rodgers in the crime drama film Cherry. Lastly, he appeared in two episodes of the spy action thriller series Citadel as Duke.

When is One Day coming to Netflix?

The romantic drama series is slated to land on Netflix on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2024, at 12:00 a.m. PT/3:00 a.m. ET. If you’re in the Central time zone, you’re looking at a release time of 2:00 a.m. CT on this date.

Netflix has given the show a TV-MA age rating, meaning it’s meant to be viewed by mature, adult audiences only. It has this maturity rating because of strong language, nudity, sex, and smoking. Obviously, none of the content just listed should be watched by younger audiences. So, we recommend watching this show when no kids are around. Maybe wait until they’re asleep or put on a kids’ movie or show for them to watch to keep them busy. That way, you have no distractions.
