They Cloned Tyrone, May December, and the 13 best Netflix movies (plus the 10 worst) of 2023

Best: Fair Play
Fair Play made a big splash when it premiered at Sundance in early 2023, enough that Netflix purchased the distribution rights to the movie for $20 million after a bidding war with Neon, Searchlight Pictures, and several other companies. Bridgerton’s Phoebe Dynevor leads this erotic psychological thriller as an ambitious woman named Emily who works at a cutthroat hedge fund in Manhattan alongside her fiancé Luke (Alden Ehrenreich).
Luke and Emily have been dating for a while and hiding their relationship from their colleagues at work. When Emily finds out Luke might be getting a coveted promotion, she’s excited to share the news, but then in a twist of fate, Emily is the one who gets promoted and Luke has a difficult time accepting that. Throughout Fair Play, we see their relationship start to fray at the edges as Luke struggles with his partner getting promoted over him and things eventually turn downright ugly.
Fair Play boasts a razor-sharp script from director Chloe Domont, and the movie is a bold take on gender dynamics in the workplace from this up-and-comer. Fair Play marks Domont’s feature directorial debut and given how smart, incisive, and provocative this movie is, it will be exciting to see what she does next.
