3 Body Problem, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and 15 sci-fi and fantasy Netflix Originals coming in 2024
By Mads Lennon
Netflix has tons of exciting shows and movies lined up for 2024, but most of what we’re looking forward to falls firmly under genre fare, particularly science fiction and fantasy. Some of the most anticipated Netflix Originals releasing next year include the adaptation of 3 Body Problem, the live-action reimagining of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Millie Bobby Brown’s movie Damsel, but there’s lots more on the horizon!
Fans of Arcane will finally get the show’s second season, Sweet Home will be back for more, and Star Trek: Prodigy will make its Netflix debut with brand new episodes after the streaming service saved the show from cancellation. If you love all things sci-fi and fantasy then Netflix is going to be a frequent stop for you in 2024.
Here are the 15 sci-fi/fantasy Netflix Originals we’re most looking forward to watching next year.
Damsel
A twist on the typical “damsel in distress” story, Damsel is a dark fantasy film starring Millie Bobby Brown as a princess who believes she’s marrying into a royal family, only to learn it’s all a trap and she’s actually a planned sacrifice. Thrown into a cave with a fire-breathing dragon, she must do whatever it takes to survive using only her wits and whatever she can find around her. Angela Bassett, Robin Wright, and Nick Robinson also star.
3 Body Problem
Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy finally comes to our screens on March 21, 2024 in the adaptation of the first book of the series, 3 Body Problem. Created by Game of Thrones‘ David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, and True Blood‘s Alexander Woo, 3 Body Problem centers on an astrophysicist conscripted into the military and sent to a secret base in the 1960s after her father is brutally murdered. Her decisions during that era reflect across time and space as a group of scientists try to save humanity from a terrifying threat in the present.
Star Trek: Prodigy season 2
Star Trek: Prodigy is a charming animated series set in the beloved sci-fi universe. Following six young outcasts as they work together to get to know the ship they’ve commandeered and explore the galaxy, Star Trek: Prodigy has grown a devoted fanbase over the years.
It’s that fanbase that helped save the show as Paramount+ canceled it after its 20-episode first season wrapped. Netflix picked up seasons 1 and 2. Season 1 of the series will begin streaming on December 25 and the second season will air in 2024.
The Electric State
Millie Bobby Brown is shaping up to have a busy 2024 between filming on the fifth and final season of Stranger Things and doing press for her new movies Damsel and The Electric State. Based on the graphic novel series by Simon Stålenhag, The Electric State is the latest Netflix/Russo brothers collaboration and follows Brown’s character as she sets out to find her missing brother with the help of a robot.
The Dragon Prince season 6
The Dragon Prince is easily one of Netflix’s most acclaimed and popular animated series of all time. The show received a rare multi-season renewal and will get the chance to finish its saga with a seventh and final season. Season 5 dropped in the summer of 2023 and the sixth season is expected to premiere in 2024. We don’t have too much info to share on the next season yet, though we do know that “Book 6” is titled “Stars” and the first episode is titled “Startouched.”
Avatar: The Last Airbender
The beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender is finally (supposedly) getting a proper live-action adaptation. It remains to be seen how it will be received, but the early teasers and photos make it look significantly better than the 2010 film at least. For those unfamiliar with the story, it follows a young Avatar who learns how to master the four elements to restore balance to the world amid an ongoing threat from the Fire Nation. Avatar: The Last Airbender premieres on February 22, 2024.
The Umbrella Academy season 4
Our time with the Hargreeves siblings is almost at an end, but we cannot wait to see what happens in the upcoming fourth and final season. Knowing the infamous family, they’re sure to deliver plenty of time-traveling and apocalyptic twists when the show returns in 2024. We don’t have a release date yet, but there’s a good chance the show will be back in the early months of the new year.
