Young Sheldon season 7 release date on CBS and production status

As most of you know, Young Sheldon is not a Netflix Original. And so that means the streamer is licensing the series from another network, and that’s CBS. The broadcaster is the one in charge of everything for the show. And we actually have not just the release date, but the end date of the final season as well.

Young Sheldon season 7 premieres Thursday, Feb. 15, 2024, at 8 p.m. ET on CBS. There’s going to be a total of only 14 episodes in the shortened season, coming to a grand conclusion on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at 8 p.m. ET on CBS. The finale is going to be an hour long.

It’s going to take a while for the seventh season to make its way to Netflix, and that’s if it ever does (more on that below). So if you’re impatient and simply can’t wait, we don’t blame you! Season 6 is currently streaming in full on Max, along with the other five seasons. Upon the release of new episodes on CBS, Young Sheldon season 7 will stream on Paramount+ the next day. Then once the season is over, all the episodes of the final season will eventually move exclusively to Max as well.

Filming updates

* Season 6 SPOILER below *

Work on the seventh season officially started on Nov. 21, 2023, thanks to a social media post from Iain Armitage, who plays the titular character. We can expect a new title card as well, as TVLine confirmed that season 7 will have a new main title sequence with Emily Osment’s Mandy and baby CeCe included with the Cooper family. Aw! You can find a behind-the-scenes photo of the group below:

Was Young Sheldon season 7 affected by the writers strike and actors strike?

Initially, Young Sheldon season 7 was supposed to be a part of the fall 2023 schedule on CBS. That means we should have seen the final season sometime in September or October of 2023. However, the writers strike and actors strike that affected all of Hollywood and overall production delayed the season.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) came to an agreement on Sept. 27, 2023, and the strike was resolved then. The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and AMPTP didn’t resolve things until Nov. 9, 2023, when a tentative agreement was reached. Though the new contract hasn’t been signed yet, it does mean that the strike is over and work can resume once again. Many networks and production companies tried to get back to work ASAP, and Young Sheldon was one of them.

“Pancake Sunday and Textbook Flirting” – Mary struggles to make new friends while Mandy pushes Georgie to date another woman, on YOUNG SHELDON, Thursday, Jan. 12 (8:00-8:31 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+*. Could Young Sheldon season 7 (and 6!) come to Netflix and when could it happen?

As mentioned above, only the first five seasons of the comedy-drama are currently available to watch on Netflix. The streamer has not announced whether future seasons of the sitcom will be added in the future.

Now, is it possible that Netflix will eventually add both seasons 6 and 7 to its catalog? Yes, it’s very possible. It just depends on what kind of deal the streaming service has worked out with CBS. For example, we know that Outlander‘s parent company Starz and Netflix seem to have a deal where new seasons of the time-travel romance are added two years after the finale date of that respective season.

It’s possible the story about the young genius might follow the same pattern. Young Sheldon season 5 came to an end in May 2022, a year and a half before the Cooper-centric production was added to Netflix. So, it’s possible that seasons 6 and 7 might follow that same pattern too.

The sixth season’s finale aired in May 2023, which would then put us at a potential November 2024 release. And even though there were production delays due to the strikes, season 7 is still coming to an end in May 2024. So we could possibly see Young Sheldon season 7 on Netflix in November 2025. Hopefully, the streamer can provide some context here soon!

The Big Bang Theory voice cameos so far, and who we still need to hear from

Of course, we can’t talk about Young Sheldon without mentioning The Big Bang Theory! That’s how we got this wonderful show in the first place as it serves as a prequel. Though it takes place in the past, we’ve had some fun voice cameos since Jim Parsons, aka Adult Sheldon, narrates Young Sheldon. There are fan-favorites we’ve already heard from, and some cast members that still have time to make a voice cameo. We shared them all below:

Voice cameos that have happened

  • Kaley Cuoco (as bacteria in a dream, not Penny) – season 3 episode 10
  • Mayim Bialik as Amy (twice) – season 4 episode 1 and season 5 episode 16
  • Simon Helberg as Howard – season 5 episode 7

Voice cameos that have not happened

  • Kaley Cuoco as Penny
  • Johnny Galecki as Leonard
  • Kunal Nayyar as Raj
  • Melissa Rauch as Bernadette

Speaking of Big Bang, I do want to mention the possibility of George’s cheating storyline and death that’s supposed to happen. We know from the flagship series that both events happen, with the patriarch of the family passing when Sheldon is 14 years old. And season 7 is pretty much at that age for Sheldon. Now whether the show decides to depict these two events, we’ll have to wait and see for the official synopsis, trailer, and for the season to actually debut. In the meantime, we’re going to stay positive and honestly live in ignorant bliss!

Stay tuned to Netflix Life as we bring you updates about Young Sheldon season 7!
